Jewish communities throughout history have "arrived" when they can afford to commission, buy or borrow their own Torah. The process of writing, transporting and dedicating a Torah is often a foundational moment in the history of a Jewish community - whether defined as a region, city, or individual synagogue. In the 1979 Western comedy-drama The Frisco Kid, Gene Wilder plays a Polish rabbi sent to San Francisco to deliver a Torah and serve the new community there. His adventures along the way, although humorous, explore serious issues about the value of the Bible, and the sacrifices Jews have made to preserve it.
