Help make cat declawing illegal in Los Angeles

by Animal Advocates
September 4, 2009 Councilmembers Bill Rosendahl, Tony Cardenas and Paul Koretz made a motion to make cruel and inhumane cat declaw surgery illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Declawing a cat involves amputating the last digit of all her toes. The ban would make the procedure illegal except for medical purposes. It's currently illegal in the City of West Hollywood and and many countries in Europe. We need your help ending this unnecessary and sadistic surgery in Los Angeles.

The next step toward approval is for the motion to be heard in the Public Safety committee. Councilmembers Greig Smith, Tony Cardenas, Jan Perry, Dennis Zine, and Ed Reyes are on that committee. Please, contact the Public Safety committee members and encourage them to support the declaw ban. (Greig Smith will have to recuse himself from voting as his chief of staff is related to the lobbyist opposing the declaw ban).

After the motion passes the Public Safety Committee it will be heard in front of the entire City Council. Please, start contacting your councilmember now and urge them to vote for the declaw ban. Let's make the City of Los Angeles the largest American City to ban the inhumane practice of declawing cats. What is cat declawing?: When a cat is "declawed" they actually amputate the last digit of all her toes. This makes climbing nearly impossible and walking painful. Due to pain in their paws cats may stop using their litter box or start biting. A declawed cat is more likely to be dumped and euthanized at the shelter because of these unwanted behaviors. Besides causing cats to suffer this causes animal control costs to increase for the City. More information here http://www.stopdeclaw.com

Why would anyone oppose this ban?: The CVMA (California Veterinary Medical Association) opposes the ban because they want to sell this unnecessary surgery to unsuspecting cat owners who don't realize how inhumane it can be or the devastating behavioral effects. Vets who stopped declawing cats in West Hollywood did not note a drop in income. The City did not note a loss in tax revenue either. Others services can be sold to deal with inappropriate clawing issues in a humane manner.

How you can help: Write a letter, send a fax, email, call or even meet with your councilmember in person. Contact information with sample letter here.

While my firm represents the SCVMA, I have not been retained to serve as a lobbyist on this issue. Furthermore, even if I a retained at some future point, Councilman Smith is not required by law to recuse himself. Please get your facts straight.

I am looking at the LA City ethics filing right now. You are a registered lobbyist. Your registered client is SCVMA. You even sent out a press release about your new client earlier this year. SCVMA is against declaw. Greig Smith must recuse himself from the vote because your nephew who used to work in your office is his head of staff.

Here is the LA City ethics filing for 2009. Scroll down to your name

Here is press release announcing your new client

Harvey Englander was sent the below post which shows he is a registered lobbyist with the City of LA. He registered the SCVMA as his client as a lobbyist this year. He did not respond. I guess he didn't think anyone would do their research. The LA City Ethics Commission has been contacted about this violation.

His nephew Mitch Englander is running for City Council. He used to work in his uncle's office. Do we need a lobbyist as a council person? You know he would hype his uncle's clients. I believe that is their plan. No more corruption in City Hall.
