“Dare Not Walk Alone”
The laws were rewritten, but inequality remains.

Dare Not Walk Alone was conceived in 2003 by artist Jeremy Dean while he was living in “America’s oldest [European-settled] city,” Saint Augustine, Florida. When Dean volunteered to restore the stained glass windows in an historically Black church he learned of the events of 1964—protests, beatings, and a campaign of non-violent civil disobedience that led to the passage of the first Civil Rights Act.

This film is an emotional march from past to present combining rarely seen news footage from 1964 with present-day testimony to tell the true story of troubled times in St. Augustine. See African-Americans and their allies put their lives on the line to force the U.S. President to sign the first Civil Rights Act. The film goes on to address the inequalities and oppression that are the daily reality for the Black community and the need for continued struggle. 83min., 2008.
