A Wedding Party – and Die-In
To Say NO to Obama’s War On Afghanistan

Tomorrow in San Francisco’s world-famous Union Square, war resisters will give tourists, shoppers, and locals a demonstration of daily life in Afghanistan, where US bombing strategies indiscriminately target large groups of civilians – such as wedding parties. “In their part of the world,” commented World Can’t Wait spokesperson Giovanni Jackson, “the words ’til death do us part…’ take on new meaning.”

As the Blue Angels begin their Saturday “performance” World Can’t Wait, Code Pink, Progressive Democrats of America, and other war resisters will reenact a scene all too common in Afghanistan: those indiscriminate and deadly attacks on civilians from the air.

The public is invited to join in this WEDDING PARTY/DIE-IN in Union Square starting at 3:00. The Blue Angels are scheduled to “perform” starting at that time.

This week marked the eighth anniversary of the U.S. war against Afghanistan, and the announcement that Barack Obama, commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces now engaged in numerous wars of aggression and occupations, has been given the Nobel Peace Prize. Visible, large-scale antiwar protest actions have been taking place around the country, notably by 500 marchers (with 61 arrests) at the White House and by a large demonstration inside New York’s Grand Central Station.

Stephanie Tang of World Can’t Wait said today: “At the very moment Obama is expanding the war against Afghanistan, the Blue Angels are roaring over San Francisco in a show of American military might – reminding us of the death and destruction already raining down on the people of Afghanistan in this immoral, illegitimate war. This is a time for resistance.”

Thank you for this historic moment when the peace movement finally has an organized protest against this now 28 year military recruiting show. PLEASE PACK UNION SQUARE FOR A PEACE RALLY. The outrage at both the illegal air show over a city glorifying war and at the endless wars perpetrated by a government that has just been crowned by the Nobel "Peace" Prize must be heard loudly and clearly. For more on the sordid history of the Nobel War Prize, see World Socialist Website, 10/10/09, "The Nobel War Prize," at:
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/oct2009/pers-o10.shtml
Down Memory Lane quotes:
"Yet, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize has always been a dubious distinction. Its reputation has never really recovered from the decision to award it in 1973 to Henry Kissinger, who is today unable to leave the United States for fear of being arrested as a war criminal."

"A few years later, Menachem Begin was chosen for the prize. The Nobel committee chose to ignore his long career as a terrorist and killer, honoring him for reaching the Camp David deal with Anwar Sadat of Egypt, his co-recipient." (There is still no peace in the Middle East.)

"Jimmy Carter, whose administration instigated a war in Afghanistan that claimed a million lives, was given the same award in 2002."

"The committee cannot be accused of violating its own principles, such as they are. The founder of the prize, Alfred Nobel, was the inventor of dynamite. He would no doubt be intrigued by the Pentagon’s efforts to speed up production of the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), a 30,000-pound bomb designed to obliterate underground targets. The weapon is being readied for possible use against Iran."

"The Nobel Peace Prize is, and always has been, a political award given with the aim of promoting definite policies."

"The selection was made by a committee composed of five members of the Norwegian parliament drawn from the main parties, ranging from the far-right to the social democrats. Its decisions reflect positions prevailing within the European ruling elite as a whole."

"Obama’s Nobel prize, far from signaling hope that the world’s greatest military power is turning toward peace, is itself an endorsement of war and serves as a warning that the intensifying crisis of world capitalism is creating the conditions for resurgent militarism and the threat of widening international conflicts."
