KPFA Board Member and Pacifica Vice Chair Wanzala Supports Attack On Democracy Now
KPFA board member Joe Wanzala who is also Vice Chair of Pacifica supported a resolution aimed against Democracy Now at the Pacifica Board meeting.
"New Pacifica's" frontal attack on Democracy Now!
After rejecting Cynthia McKinney for ED, Aaron's Pacifica now turns on Amy Goodman
Christopher Condon, an ally of Pacifica's interim director Grace Aaron, last month introduced a resolution at a meeting of the Pacifica National Board's Governance Committee targeting Democracy Now! over allegations that is is being secretly funded by the CIA.
The action, which would require every Pacifica programmer to disclose all sources of funding above $5000 and related contracts, passed the Committee and is before the Pacifica National Board, meeting in Houston this weekend, for approval.
An assembled pair of audio clips from Condon explaining the purpose of his resolution can be heard at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP6_xGxbi20 and an audio clip of the entire discussion - and votes - can be heard at http://www.kpftx.org/archive.php#governance090917 (at Part 1 of the Sept. 17 meeting from 0:03:32 to 0:41:25). In the clips, Condon, in particular - although he denies it several times - makes it clear that Goodman is the target of his resolution.
A Counterpunch article by Iain Boal entitled "The New Crisis at Pacifica" provides some of the political context for this attack; it can be found at http://www.counterpunch.org/boal10062009.html
Condon based the claimed need to dissect the finances of Democracy Now! on purported allegations that DN has received "CIA conduit funding" through the Ford Foundation to suppress information about the 9/11 "Truth" Movement.
However, a search of Democarcy Now's website - the place where the voices of such 9/11 skeptics as Willie Rodriguez were first given national coverage - shows many links to 9/11 stories over the past years. See, e.g., http://www.democracynow.org/search?query=9%2F11+&relevance=1
Oddly, Pacifica recently rejected the application of perhaps the nation's best-known 9/11 Truth activist - former Rep. Cynthia McKinney - for the position of Executive Director. In fact, her application was rejected twice - first in June, before the application was even reviewed by the personnel committee charged with conducting the search, and again on September 23, when she received an unsigned rejection notice from Pacifica. Audio of McKinney detailing her experiences at the hands of the PNB can be heard at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySSDj7WJCls
On Condon's resolution, Board member Nia Bediako - a member of the Justice & Unity coalition - sought to table the matter until the assault on Goodman could be reviewed by counsel, but her motion was defeated. Board member Joe Wanzala, another Aaron ally, called the resolution "a matter of due dilligence,"and said he fully supported the motion. And Sean O'Brien, yet another Aaron ally, even opposed - twice - extending the time to attempt to rewrite the resolution, although an extension passed over his opposition both times, with Condon and Wanzala voting against.
A proposed amendment which would have limited the policy to Pacifica's internal paid and unpaid programmers - exempting such syndicated programs as DN! and BBC World News - failed on a 4 to 4 tie vote, with Condon, O'Brien and Wanzala joined by George Reiter, another Aaron ally, in voting against.
In further discussion, Condon revealed another goal of his resolution - to reduce funding of Democracy Now!, the network's most popular program, in future contract negotiations. During this discussion, no recognition was made of the fact that the program is, in actual dollars, the network's largest fundraiser.
The resolution passed 5 to 4. It's full text is available at http://pacifica.org/documents/pnb091009agenda.htm under "Motion on Funding Disclosure."

I do not think Joe Wanzala is supporting an attack on Democracy Now! The author is conflating the issues.
A Counterpunch article by Iain Boal entitled "The New Crisis at Pacifica" does not comport with reality but is understandable considering his source.

How is an "attack" to ask where the money is coming from? This is just an example of the "transparency" everyone claims to support.
"Christopher Condon, an ally of Pacifica's interim director Grace Aaron, last month introduced a resolution at a meeting of the Pacifica National Board's Governance Committee targeting Democracy Now! over allegations that is is being secretly funded by the CIA."
To paraphase Rep Barney Frank, exactly what planet does Mr Condon spend most of his time?
How can a network dedicated to bringing truth continue to give harbor to 9-11 conspiracies that have been widely discredited.
I consider the 9-11 Truthers as the tea-baggers of the Left. Nonsensical fanatics that chant 'birth certificate' or 'thermite, CIA' depending on which extreme they fall to.
The claim of transparency is facetious. No one demands that Bonnie Faulkner defend the wacko conspiracies she broadcasts, no one takes Dennis Bernstein to task for the over the top theatrics he pushs. Yet Amy Goodman must become transparent because she refuses to fit into some baseless conspiracy theory.
Allowing this to continue will simply cause Pacifica to slip futher into irrelevance
After 9--1 truthers and their witing or unwitting supporters (Joe Wanzala, Richard Phelps, and the rest of the so called Independants) get control, there will be very littler of a station for them to do anything with. Simply an ailing platform for their own pet theories, which will further crumble to nothingness if WBAI collapses on it's own weight.
The Golden Goose of Pacifica is on the block and Grace , Joe and their ilk have the knife poised above it's head

Underwriting announcement are already required by the FCC.
Major donors are also required to be reported by the IRS.
What isn't required is the pointless insinuations by Wanzala, Feldman and the rest of their ilk, and certainly not by Pacifica.

Ironically, if you watch the evening news show that PBS airs, the names of the corporations and foundations who "make possible" the news show through their grant subsidies are indicated. Are the names of the foundations whose grants to Democracy Now! help fund this daily news show still not being announced prior to the show and after the show airs on Pacifica?
Are the amounts of grant money being received from foundations like the Lannen Foundation and the Glaser Progress foundation by the Democracy Now! producers still not being fully disclosed to Democracy Now! show listeners?
Are the stocks of weapons manufacturers and Wall Streeet banks that are contained in the stock portfolios of multi-billion dollar foundations like the Ford Foundation still not being disclosed to Democracy Now! listeners.
Following is some info related to the history of foundation grants to Pacifica/Democracy Now which might interest KPFA listeners:
"By 1995, billionaire speculator George Soros' Open Society Institute had given the Pacifica Foundation a $40,000 grant. And in 1996, the Carnegie Corporation of New York [whose board of directors then included Condoleezza Rice] gave Pacifica a $25,000 grant to launch its DEMOCRACY NOW show.
In 1997 came a $13,000 grant from the J.M. Kaplan Fund to Pacifica to provide support for DEMOCRACY NOW. And in 1998 came a $25,000 grant to Pacifica from the Public Welfare Foundation "to report on hate crimes and related issues as part of its `DEMOCRACY NOW!" public-affairs radio program and an additional $10,000 grant to support DEMOCRACY NOW from the J.M. Kaplan Fund.
That same year the Ford Foundation gave a $75,000 grant to Pacifica "toward marketing consultancy, promotional campaign and program development activities for radio program, DEMOCRACY NOW." In 1998 and 1999, two grants, totalling $22,500, were also given to Pacifica by the Boehm Foundation, to support its DEMOCRACY NOW show.
In early 2002, an additional Ford Foundation grant of $75,000 was given to Deep Dish TV "for the television news series, DEMOCRACY NOW, to continue incorporating the aftermath of the September 11th attack into future broadcasts."
