Fake press release cancels Denver Columbus parade

The Denver Columbus parade looks very unpleasant. Nobody with small children would really want to attend this thing. There is no tossed candy, no clowns, and the only floats are militaristic flatbed trucks, bikers on harleys jeering the members of the Four Directions indigenous marchers who often come to register disapproval.

Columbus was a very vile and vicious character, and was judged as a criminal even by the standards of the late 1400s. He ended up in prison after his trips to the caribbean for murdering fellow europeans, and countless residents of hispaniola. He was also a rapist, a slave trader, and was primarily interested in finding gold and riches. There are countless italians and italian americans of higher ethical quality with superior accomplishments who should be used for heritage celebration equivalent to St. Patrick's day or Cinco de Mayo or Oktoberfest.

DENVER -- An e-mail sent to news agencies alerting people to the cancellation of the Columbus Day Parade is a fake.

The bogus press release was sent in the name of Richard SaBell, president of the Sons of Italy Columbus Day Parade Committee.

The press release, issued Thursday afternoon, said the annual Oct. 10 parade was canceled due to lack of funding.

SaBell told 7NEWS that someone created a bogus e-mail account in his name and the organization is investigating. SaBell said he had no idea who sent out the hoax e-mail but most likely somebody who is against the Columbus Day parade -- which is the subject of protest every year.

"Maybe the protesters didn't want to protest and this is how they are protesting instead," SaBell said.

He said he doesn't know if criminal charges will be filed.

"Technically -- they impersonated me," SaBell said.

"The Columbus Day Parade has not been canceled. It will go on as planned rain or shine," said Colorado president of the Sons Of Italy.
