bad news - Jeff is back in prison

by Friends of Jeff Free Luers
In a bizarre turn of unfortunate events, Jeff has been taken back in to custody after having a few moments of freedom.
Dear Friends,

In a bizarre turn of unfortunate events, Jeff has been taken back in to custody after having a few moments of freedom.

Apparently this is because of an "error" on behalf the Oregon Department of Corrections. He was "mistakenly" released because they thought he was eligible for early release, but because of - as we understand it at this point - Oregon's Measure 11 mandatory minimum sentencing Jeff did not qualify for this early release.

We are still trying to wrap our heads around this turn of events and will let you all know more as soon as we know more.

The past 9 years has been a roller coaster of emotions for Jeff, his family and friends, and today was no different.

Thank you again for all your support.

§Jeff's mailing address
by Friends of Jeff Free Luers
Dear Friends,

Apologies for multiple emails going out these past few days, but we hope you understand given the circumstances.

For those of you that need to catch up, please check out this news article:
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2009/10/freedoms_just_another_word_for.html

Jeff has been returned to CRCI, a minimum security prison in Portland, Oregon where he has been since his appeal reduced his sentence from 23 to 10 years. His release date is now expected to be December 16, 2009.

Please write him letters of support:

Jeffrey Luers # 13797671
CRCI
9111 NE Sunderland Ave
Portland, OR 97211-1708

If anyone is able to make small donations to his prison commissary account, he currently does not have any (it was emptied when he was released). Please read the following instructions to do so: money orders or cashier's check only [absolutely no checks or cash] can be made out to: "DOC Central Trust for Jeffrey Luers, #13797671" and mailed to: Central Trust, PO Box 14400, Salem OR 97309-5077. On the money order/cashier´s check, write the name and mailing address of purchaser, including city, state, and zip code. The money will be put in Jeff's account upon receipt through the mail.

We will keep you updated as news comes our way.

Thank you all for your support and expressions of love (and outrage!).

§update on Jeff and ways to help
by Friends of Jeff Free Luers
Dear Friends,

Many of you have been offering your support and are asking what you can do to
help Jeff. As you have likely heard by now, on October 2, 2009, Jeff was
released from prison after a supplemental judgment granted Jeff an additional
reduction in his total incarceration time. He had served almost 9.5 years of
what was originally a 22.5 year prison term (reduced to 10 years on appeal).
After tasting freedom for a few short hours, he reported to his probation
officer in Eugene as directed, and was taken back in to custody, apparently as
a result of a "mistake" by the Oregon Department of Corrections. As it now
stands, Jeff is scheduled to be released on December 16, 2009.

In the coming weeks, his attorney, friends and supporters will continue to
fight for Jeff's early release, but in the meantime, you can only imagine the
emotional roller coaster that Jeff and his loved ones have had to endure--the
thrill of regaining his freedom, and the agony of then being returned to
prison. Please continue writing Jeff letters of support. His mailing address is
always available on the home page: http://freejeffluers.org/

One important way you can show support for Jeff is by donating to his
post-prison support fund. This money will assist him in getting back on his
feet upon his release. He is currently registered full time for college
classes and will be working part time for a land restoration company, but any
financial assistance in paying his rent, course books, or other living expenses
would be very much appreciated. This transition and starting life over again
is a difficult and critical time for any prisoner. You can also send gift cards
so Jeff could buy clothing or groceries, etc at local stores. You can send
these donations to his support group at: "Free's Defense Fund," PO Box 3,
Eugene, OR 97440. Other options, including paypal, available here:
http://freejeffluers.org/donate.html and merchandise including “Free Jeff
Luers” tshirts are available here: http://freejeffluers.org/merchandise.html

(Note: Jeff expressed his concern that the weather will be cold if he is
released in December, so if someone is able to purchase the REI jacket on his
wish list, check it out here:

If you live in or near Eugene, please consider attending the Final Free Benefit
Dinner on November 7 at Morning Glory, details described at the end of this
message. It is our hope that we, with the help of Jeff’s attorney, will
secure his early release and Jeff will be the guest of honor at this event!!

Finally, please also consider supporting the Civil Liberties Defense Center.
CLDC has been a huge help to Jeff both recently and over the years. They work
tirelessly with very little pay and we owe them a debt of gratitude. Donation
details and information on CLDC can be found at http://www.cldc.org

Thank you again.
