The Racism Within (All of Us)

by danielsan
An editorial comment/response to the issues brought up during close to six months of debate and discussion around bilingualism and diversity at Free Radio Santa Cruz.

There's been a lot of talk on the radio pitting Spanish language programmers against English language programmers. Who does the work, who pays for the equipment, who belongs in Santa Cruz, who belongs in Watsonville, who donates to FRSC, who listens. Who fits in which box, who speaks for whom. Who owns the equipment, even. This has been argued at meetings, on the air, and on the internet.

I want to be clear from the start here, that I believe this to be dialogue and debate that organizations doing the work of building community need to be having--as hard as it is, that we as a station need to discuss our own racism, our own assumptions, to be critical of our own results, our own process, our own members. This is a process that's necessary to progress and I do not shy away from it: All organizations in Santa Cruz need to do this work, particularly ones that have gone years and years and you look around and see that the folks involved are still primarily straight white men. Don't tell me it's because Santa Cruz is mostly white, or mostly straight. The communities engaged in active resistance are most definitely not. There's a reason why Free Radio Santa Cruz is mostly white just like there's a reason why Santa Cruz itself is mostly white.

What I am trying to say, is that whether or not we acknowledge it, there is an undercurrent of fierce racism in our town. It's always there, it's always bubbling. It's not limited to republicans, or rich folks. It's within all of us. It does down like this: If you grew up in a racist society, and I'd assume that all of us did, then that is not without its effects. I'll be the first one to say that I am racist. No matter how many teach-ins or trainings, books or experiences, my anti-racist unlearning has not and likely will never conquer the fine training I've received in racial discrimination, in my own place of privilege. Have I learned from my experiences? Absolutely. Do I still make mistakes? Absolutely. I have unconscious racist thoughts that manifest in more conscious thinking in my brain that sometimes continue to inform actions that I regret, words that I jumble, interactions that I'd like to do over. It's a daily struggle.

If it's not a daily struggle, then you are opting out. Then you are blind to injustice.

I say this, addressing this conflict on the air for the very first time, in response to some of the listener comments we've been getting on the voicemail, which is 427-4523 by the way. In response to several programmers at this here radio station who want hear the listener response to an increase in Spanish language programming. Now just like they've said to me, I wouldn't hold anyone responsible for what folks on 'their' side are saying, but I do state that we need to look carefully at ourselves in the mirror--all of us, no matter how we stand on this issue, when calls to the Free Radio Voicemail sound like this:

Now I hesitate and deliberated about whether to air that--but here's the deal. Ignoring it has not made it go away, and encouraging it has made it worse. We must confront it. "So much of life must go, not to forward right, but to beat back wrong" -WEB Du Bois on John Brown, in a call to beat back the evil of the world. I will fight back against this kind of virulent racism--but I will not hesitate call out those who speak the same sentiments in kinder words. That voice doesn't surprise me and it shouldn't surprise you. That voice encourages scapegoating. That voice recalls the very same Evil WEB Dubois was talking about. It hasn't been defeated--it hasn't gone away. Racism has evolved, changed, but it's still with us. That means we got work to do.

The woman we just heard is not claimed by either side of this debate--she is offered here not as a red herring but as a concession that she is within all of us. That voice is part of our schooling, our discourse, our internal dialogue. It's the voice heard internally in our most regrettable moments, it's the voice broadcast loud and belligerently on fox news. It's the spirit of our national contradictions--and it's being poked with a stick on the national stage as well as the frequency 101.1 FM, where the dialogue about whether the station should have a daily Spanish language global independent news broadcast alongside an English language global independent news broadcast (we just heard Free Speech Radio News & Informativo Pacifica aired back to back) breaks down into accusations of playing the race card and dismissive distractions.

I'm not trying to smear those who disagree with my statements with the retched nonsense we just heard. I'm trying to own it. Ignoring it has never ever made this kind of filth go away. I will not stand aside while the radio station I've worked with for years encourages, broadcasts or amplifies it.

Agree with many sentiments of said statement, but would encourage look at a couple of things in particular.

1. How can Santa Cruz be racist when the pc rhetoric is not? To truly face your racism, I think you must be able to live, work, etc. with other races. If not, your anti-racism is purely theoretical, is not tested, especially when there is conflict and your own and others prejudices bubbles to the surface. What to do when those of other races misbehave, are sexist, disrespectful, etc.? This a big issue in Santa Cruz where people fret about such discussions, not wanting to appear racist. Any questioning, or support for that matter, becomes some kind of race discussion...

2. How to have sympathy for those of other races without parading out "white guilt?" Again, I think it is apparent to most when support is not truly felt, but some kind of a party line pity party. Definitely not saying this is your sentiment in particular, but one that I have seen. I do like the idea of speaking more Spanish, teaching Spanish. A good start. But also particular issues important to local latinos like farmworker/worker rights, anti-violence campaigns, planned parenting, shitty schooling in latino schools, state of zapatisma/unions, etc. Yet, can we say that not all things latino are necessarily worthy of support? Machismo, gangs, trashing the environment, teen parenting, etc.?? Of course latinos need be the first to offer up critiques on this, but not the last....

Hey, just trying to fan the flames here, get the brushfire/bonfire going we can all warm ourselves around as this racist shit goes up in flames.

I understand what you are trying to say but the unsaid lesson here is that if anyone opposes your point of view then your racisim is bubbling to the top and you are racist. I think that is a serious guilt complex that tears apart groups like the one you mentioned.
Also why is an opionion peice here in the "Newswire" section hmmm makes me wonder whose opinions run indybay.

As a new broadcaster, although longtime FRSC listener and $$ supporter. I feel a bit caught in the middle of this debate. I really appreciate your post. Yes, we are all racists on some level & we all need to consistently take a hard look at that part of ourselves and not "opt out" as you said. I think the donor issue that was raised previously is not the issue at all, donations do not come with stipulations. I hope that is now a mute point.

It have never bothered me that FRSC has Spanish broadcasting. I do turn the channel at times as sadly i do not speak Spanish. I have noticed many hosts going to lengths to do a mixture, and I say tuned when I hear hosts going to such lengths.
I realize on the Block news, this doesn't happen. It may be very white in the City, FRSC reaches much further, both or air and on the net. Watsonville is part of our county, part of our culture and community. In my humble, maybe even somewhat misinformed opinion, we should be allowing Spanish broadcasting. As long as there is a balance, we should support it. If hosts are acting inappropriately on air, it should be dealt with on an individual level and not as a "Spanish" or "English" issue.

Just my two cents for what its worth. Thanks for you honesty in expressing your thoughts. I feel conflicted. Skidmarkbob raises issues that I understand too as a host. I hope everyone can tackle this in a healthy way without dropping the issue.

Peace

Wow... I listened to the voice mail. I get your point. But that person is not... a good reflection of an FRSC listener. She obviously has some issues of her own, as we all do. The hatred she spews is hard not to... get worked up about. There has certainly been a rise in hate against many classes, the poor and other minorities. Just look at the Sentinel's Topix forum. I believe it is heightened during our current financial crisis. But its always been there. People have a need to blame someone.

This happened during the Reagan 80's rescission. and our code Blue Troll Busting 80's. I was beaten by the cops inside the county building by a desked officer at age 13 at that time. I see many parallels to that time and now. Its our duty to not only fight such ignorance but to address it. I see this as two separate issues -- Fighting ignorance and Spanish Broadcasting.

I always try... to think about what I do and say regarding such matters because whenever you oppose anther's point of view, be it a group, a single person, or whatever, you have to gauge if their reaction and response to you really benefits your goal. You can have the best intentions and still empower or cause the opposite to escalate things making waters even murkier or the hate spread further. I think you get that just fine. Again thanks for the post. You have given me much to ponder...

good to see frsc airing its dirty laundry out and it being a seemingly productive process. this says lots to how committed y'all are to social justice issues and to working shit out. thanks.

the most notable, in my personal experience, is in the institutions of the military where a true de facto racism is encouraged by the mostly white elite/christian upper command chain.
As a drill Sargent, I found a very real division between the Army regs and the 'understood' echelon of priority which was; as expected another inside secret network of rats, assholes and other human garbage in rabid fear of real competitive performance goals. Based on talent, honor and energy.

Just wanted to say I was coming home this eve and listening to your fine radio station. Some latino dude was ranting in Spanish. It sounded terrible and staticky. I changed the channel. This happens often. I'm sure I'm not the only one tuning out. Racist? No, just looking for something resembling standards.

I have heard discussions about the ''racism within '' and how to ''fight racism '' since i became active in the 70's . A few things i have learned is what NOT to do . For example i was once in a party that was sincerely committed to ''fighting racism '' both within capitalist society as a whole and internally . But the way they ''fought '' it within the organization often backfired . Once for example i had a long heated political argument with a Puerto Rican comrade .(Not about a racial or ethnic related issue ) Other White comrades were horrified . A couple even tried to pull me away and started to apologize for my '' insensativity '' . The Puerto Rican comrade objected . said he was enjoying the exchange and said let's take this elsewhere , I'll buy you a beer .
Later on after two or three beers he said that i was the first white comrade that truly treated him as a equal . I asked him what he meant . He replied that in the interests of not appearing racist or ''insensative '' other comrades would never disagree with him ! He said that he would even pretend to advocate a position that he really didn't agree with just to provoke a good heated political fight .
Anyway there's a huge difference between showing true solidarity with People of Color and being a uncritical ''doormat '' (Like the unheathly relationship between the African Peoples Socialist Party and their white supporters of the African Peoples Solidarity Committee )
