Ocean Access; "Take A Stand" Albion Concert

by Tomas DiFiore
Saying the MLPA will reflect local values: Is Like Fishing For The Moon In The Water
MPA's are not the problem, the Marine Life Protection Act - Initiative process is the problem. It's sordid history includes cultural despots and officers from MAXXAM, ENRON, Pacific Lumber (after MAXXAM's purchase) etc. Barry Munitz held Gray Davis' hand, the north coast enviros favorite governor of all time as he signed (AB993) into law on his way out the door. Wes Chebro, although he voted for it, no longer supports it.
Who's in Charge? Big Green uses a corporate structure that buffers personal responsibility for corporate decisions using name tag regional levels of filters, just as any transnational corp.

Before the late January 2009 decision by The State Lands Commission denying the (PXP) Tranquillon Ridge Project off the coast of Santa Barbara - both the Sierra Club California and the Ocean Conservancy were listed in a press release dated 012609 as supporting an agreement to defy 40 years of true grassroots coastal protection against offshore oil.

For those of you who may have missed my article;
When Big Green Isn't Enough, Go For The Gold - Black Gold, it challenges the notion that these 2 groups are forever against new offshore oil development. It is too easy to be fooled in this corporate world of 'new green linguistics' and carbon trading. Personally I think we need to hit the reset button on the Environmental Movement.

In the PDF original press release from the EDC that I have and you can find online too -

It is Kaitlin Gaffney of Ocean Conservancy and Paul Mason, Deputy Director of Sierra Club CA that signed on with 23 other groups prior to the State Lands Commission denial of said project on 012909.

On the trail of the mis-information campaign....

There are a number of tribes and county wide businesses supporting the event, many of them 2 or 3 economic vectors beyond the obvious fishing related industry. Tickets can be purchased online also.

Just in time before the [MLPA Initiative] North coast educational workshop, Sept. 29.
“We invite all interested members of the public to participate in the upcoming educational workshop,” said Ken Wiseman, executive director of the MLPA Initiative. “It is our hope to incorporate the tremendous amount of local knowledge in the north coast community into the science-based, public process to redesign California’s marine protected areas.”

The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the public can participate in person, by teleconference and webinar from two staffed locations, or from their home or office if they have a phone line and Internet access. The three public in-person locations are:
· Eureka, Red Lion Inn, 1929 Fourth Street

· Crescent City, Best Western Northwoods Inn, 655 US Highway 101 S (staffed, teleconference/webinar location)

· Fort Bragg, Town Hall, 363 N. Main Street (staffed, teleconference/webinar location)

So come cool off on the coast, get fed, and gain insightful knowledge of what we as North Coast Natural Resource-Dependent Communities face with implementation of the MLPA Initiative, based on the experiences of those in the water and at the meetings for years now.

The CFC and RFA had an engaging booth at the Boonville Fair this last weekend. Lots of interest out there, and support for the Take A Stand Event! There will be booths of info, maps, and lots of beverages food and music!
