STOP! Suicide.

by D. Boyer (dinaboyer2 [at] gmail.com)
STOP suicide is not the answer.

STOP!
Suicide ain’t the answer.

Within the past 4 months three teenagers committed suicide at one intersection in Palo Alto, California. The intersection consists of three different streets and a Caltrain commuter train crossing. Its just another intersection in California, except it seems to attract suicidal teens. And although officials have said they don’t want the suicides glorified, someone needs to stand up and ask them to make improvements.
This is what I noticed:
The approach to the intersection is overwhelming and scary, and the signs that say the tracks are active are small and in English only.
The signs are small, and when I arrived a police officer had to physically stand up a sign because it kept falling down.
The train goes by literally at 70 miles per hour, and does not slow down even though stations in that area are less than a mile apart.
There was a police presence at the intersection today, but that cannot possible be sustainable.
And no phones existed in the area around the intersection, and Caltrains website has no suicide information available on it.
More information on suicide hotlines can be found at suicidehotline.comand the number is 1 800 784-2433.

The sign the officer is touching kept falling down. Everytime a train went by he had to physically stand up the sign even while Caltrain officials were standing there.

okay so the stations in that area seem less than a mile apart, so why does a train need to get up to full speed only to be slowed again in less than a mile?
In other words it seems the trains acquire their speed immediately, and go as fast as possible between stations that only seem a mile apart.

make them bigger and in other languages.
Its obvious people speak other languages in this country so why not put signs out there in other languages.
§No info on Caltrains website

I have not seen any information on suicide prevention on Caltrains website, and maybe they should be on the front lines of stopping suicide since they are the ones who created the intersection from hell.

suicide is a reaction, we must consider what is the cause? suicide is a right of any individual, but is only done in times of desperation. Can you safely tell someone that it's going to be alright with the crap we have to put up with? ecological destruction to name one.

think about it

Well yeah, suicide is a reaction. But fukkin A, there are plenty of opportunities to discuss ecological destruction. Why bend some other discussion to your will and crap all over yourself? Tendentious malarkey, man. Keep it real.

I believe in offering help to those considering suicide, but you can't just give an insipid post that says, suicide is not the answer. What the fuck was the quesiton? We live in a society were everybody's expectation is set well beyond what many people can meet, such as do you make enough money, are you wearing the right clothes, and then your told that if you don't have those, there must be something wrong with you.

If there is an epidemic of suicides, go after the causes, and don't pretend that they are they way they are and that is just the way it is.

The question is why commit suicide? And why? Get the whole community involved?

We all will die from something, and yes maybe suicide is a right, but sheesh I am tired of hearing about it when I wake up every morning on the news. If they want to kill themselves then they need to be private about it. Jumping in front trains, or shooting brains out on the side of the highway involves and affects other people. I was once held up on 101 one night for three hours, around 12:30am, because some person decided to shoot themselves in the head. I was stuck on a dark highway for three hours while investigators looked for body parts. The dude simply could have OD'ed on drugs or jumped from the GGB, but noooo he had to do it in a manner that affected the whole community.
The kids who are jumping in front of trains are affecting the whole community, not just their families. And it happens so much that everyone probably has a story about the time they were held up on the train because of a suicide.

its not worth it to suicide.the world is messed up and people are asking ''why''!! as if its not apparent why people are freaked.torture war toxins, and you ask why.there are types of people who are more sensitive and ''psychic'' meanong they actually have visions of things that are actuall;y happening and then they find out its true!!! thats what these people are ''seeing'' ! those are the people who are the indicators of the universe.they are told that we are mundane flag worshippers when we are all really ''psychic''.some are just more visionary.read the wisdom writings

It's actually 2.5 miles between the San Antonio and California Ave stations. This crossing just happens to be almost exactly half way, meaning full speed. Trains take four minutes between the two. So yes, they do try to get up to speed as quick as possible.

"I have not seen any information on suicide prevention on Caltrains website, and maybe they should be on the front lines of stopping suicide since they are the ones who created the intersection from hell."

As a side note, the Golden Gate Bridge only has one small link on it's front page, and it's actually about the barrier study. Also, the grade crossing is owned by Palo Alto, not Caltrain. Might soon be a moot point though. The high speed rail plans call for (and require) full grade seperation along the whole route. No crossings will make it much harder, but still not impossible.

Is anybody looking into the root cause, or are we just blaming the railroad. I went to Gunn in the early 80s. I don't remeber any suicides. what kind of pressure are these kids under these days?

NEW YORK – The American Psychological Association declared Wednesday that mental health professionals should not tell gay clients they can become straight through therapy or other treatments.
