Mayor Gavin Newsom seeks to place United Nations Global Compact Center on a Superfund Site

by Francisco Da Costa
Mayor Gavin Newsom seeks to place the United Nations Global Compact Center to monitor global warming and address other sustainability issues at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. Suffice to say that the 49ers rejected having anything to do with this same radiological contaminated area. So what makes the Mayor and the Mayor's Office of Economic Development and Workforce think for a second - that the United Nations will embrace this idea? Hunters Point is a toxic dump site and one of the worst toxic sites in the Nation. It is on the Superfund List.
Some years ago Mayor Gavin Newsom woke up and decided to have the Summer Olympics in San Francisco. Even as some of us wondered where would he house the Summer Olympics - Gavin put a team of experts overnight and decided the Olympic Village would be situated stark naked in the middle of Hunters Point Naval Shipyard that is under the jurisdiction of the United Sates Navy, today.

I remember going to the meeting and meeting the organizers. None of them were fully aware that Hunters Point was a Superfund Site. None of them were aware that Depleted Uranium was tested at Hunters Point. None of them were aware that Bayview Hunters Point has the largest amount of CANCER cases in San Francisco and the Bay Area. None of them were aware that many mothers have still born babies in the area. None of them were aware that children, elders, and other were suffering from bloody noses, headaches, teary eyes, and so on.

Some of us wrote to the International Olympic Association and the idea of ever having an Olympic Village and Summer Olympics in San Francisco, fizzled out. Then, Mayor Gavin Newsom and his cronies pushed for having the 49ers at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. Well, the world knows what happened to that. The 49ers have stated they will remain in Santa Clara.

Now, out of the blues comes this idea that the United Nations Global Compact Center some measly 80,000 square feet will be centered on Parcel C facing the Bay and the land and infrastructure donated by Lennar, the Rogue Developer. The land has not been mitigated and the land belongs to the U.S. Navy but the City and County of San Francisco is trying to make headlines.

Lennar does not have jurisdiction of the land. The United States Navy is mandated to clean up the Shipyard all of it - Parcels B, C, D, E, E2, F, G, and the other newly carved out parcels to Residential Standards - mandated by Proposition P as passed by over 87% by the voting constituents of San Francisco in the year 2000.

Gavin Newsom and the Mayor Office of Economic Development and Workforce must fully comprehend that they will NOT, I repeat NOT, be able to make this move without much opposition. This time around they will have to pay a very heavy price. In the past Mayor Gavin Newsom, Lennar, and others could bribe the local mostly Black sell outs - not this time around.

This time around the matter will go to court. In recent months the community has WON many victories in court. If the Mayor thinks for a second we are playing - he is sadly mistaken. This time around we are armed and will take the Mayor and his cronies to court.

We will also bring this glaring issue to the Gubernatorial Town Hall meeting. There is no need for Mayor Gavin Newsom to answer our question - we will not ask him questions. We have a plan to bring this issue and other issues to the fore. We will be joined by our Asian, Latino, and the other diverse population of San Francisco that is fed up with Mayor Gavin Newsom and his cronies.

At this juncture we are putting the Pacific Heights Mafia on notice too.

It is a shame that Lisa Jackson the Director, of the Environmental Protection Agency is tolerating such blatant behavior on the part of Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Mayor's Office of Economic Development and Workforce. That goes for the local Regional IX - EPA and other local, State, and Federal Regulatory Agencies.

Our children are dying. Our elders are dying. We have the highest number of Cancer patients in the Bayview Hunters Point. Not to mention thousands suffering from Asthma and other chronic diseases. And here come the Mayor with this foul, ill-thought, un eco-friendly idea - of placing an United Nations Global Compact Center in the middle of Chernobyl?

The local Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Toxic and Substances Control, the Water Regional Board, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the San Francisco Health Department, and the many other local, State and Federal Agencies have not taken Hunters Point Naval Shipyard seriously. They have sided with the thug, crooks, developers, politicians, and we know it and have been knowing it for a long, long time.

The United States Navy must remove the over 2 million tons of very toxic dirt most of it radiological in nature. Excavate the toxic dirt and transport it to a legal toxic dump. We must think about "Cumulative Pollution". On Parcel E right now there is an underground fire because of excess Methane Gas.

Over 300 radiological elements are found in and around Parcel C where the proposed United Nations Global Compact Center is proposed to be built. Over 150 tons of Methane Gas per year spews into the air from the Shipyard most of it is landfill. One ton of Methane Gas equals 22 tons of Carbon Dioxide. So, much for the proposed United Nations Global Compact Center and being eco-friendly.

We had an underground fire in the year 2000 on Parcel E that kept burning for over a month. To date there has been NO detail evaluation of that fire. The Regulatory agencies do not want to talk much about 2000 underground fire.

The Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is prone to liquefaction.

The Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is prone to flooding.

Mayor Gavin Newsom better stop chiding with the constituents of San Francisco. The United Nations better take note of this serious Superfund Site one of the worst in the Nation.

San Francisco Board of Supervisors the so called PROGRESSIVES stop sleeping and wake up. Time to have a hearing on Lennar, the Rogue Developer and all those in bed with Lennar.
