NEW ORLEANS STILL DESPERATELY NEEDS HELP
The Lower 9th Ward, Holy Cross, Arabi, etc... are still rebuilding and need your help. Thousands of residents gave their life savings to criminal contractors who took them for all they were worth. They need volunteer help to make their houses liveable again so they can return.
There are very few businesses in the devastated areas, making it difficult for residents who return to get groceries and other supplies. With miles of empty lots, the opportunity for urban farming, nurseries, farmer's markets, and self-sustaining small businesses are infinite. Let's make their food system more secure and improve access to healthy, affordable food in low-income areas. Rebuild it, but rebuild it BETTER.

CARE-A-VAN TO NEW ORLEANS
There is much to be done. Please join me on my journey to New Orleans starting September 26th. I'm staying until March 2010, so unless you want to stay that long too, you'll have to arrange another way back. Rides to the airport gladly given in exchange for a little gas money.
I'm going to arrange my own housing, but might consider a guest house. There are many inexpensive options on craigslist. A group could rent a big, cool pad 10 min away from the 9th ward for very cheap. I'm looking for a 2br myself that my would have room for me to work on art and have a relative visit now and then.
If you don't plan on staying long and just want basic digs, you might also consider living in the common ground dorm: http://www.commongroundrelief.org/?q=volunteer
I may have room in my car for one person, but I haven't decided if I need the room for stuff yet or not. I won't make a decision until sept. If I do take a person, they cannot have a lot of stuff at all. No pets, no cigarettes, no hard drugs, no alcohol or radio hogs. Also, I'm not going to dally much since money's tight, hotels are expensive, and I need to get to new orleans by Oct. 1st to rent a place. Soooo...if you have just a dufflebag, a smile and $200, I'll give you a lift to the big easy in a comfortable 2000 Jetta.
