BART Employees: Not as Greedy or Detached from Reality As You Probably Think
Friday, July 17, 2009 : This week, the majority of BART’s employees will decide whether to accept executives’ offer for a contract covering the next four years of their service to the transit agency, or urge their negotiating team to keep trying. A lot of my fellow employees keep asking me if they should vote for it. And a lot of my friends and neighbors keep asking if I’ll recommend to others that they vote for it, panicked by the potential of a strike.
Since it matters so much to everyone in the Bay Area, I decided to pose the question back to the hundreds of thousands of riders who rely on BART every day to get around and are now paying more thanks to a recent fare hike: What do you think about the deal executives are offering?Read More

I support the demands of the BART workers unions . What they are fighting for are very modest proposals . If there is a srike i will join them on the picket lines .
BUT the potential for mass public support has been hindered , i think , by the union leaders refusal to take a clear stand denouncing the murder of Apprentice Butcher Oscar Grant on Jan.1 .
One SEIU (BART ) leader told me that the shooting was a ''tragedy '' but that overall the BART police were ''good guys '' . No, accidentially hitting a kid while driving murder is a ''tragedy ''. This , as millions have seen on TV and the Net , was murder . And if the other BART cops are such ''good guys '' then why are they firmly in ''solidarity '' with their ex-collegue Johannes Meherserle ?
Not to say that other unions have been in the forefront of the Justice for Oscar Grant campaign .
Yes there was a noticeable union presence at the demos last Jan . But so much more could have ans should be done . It would be good if when Mehserle finally goes on trial if hundereds of Union members (with BART unions in the front ) are outside the courtroom in solidarity with the family of Oscar Grant .
An injury to one is an injury to all ! That's the reality not a abstact slogan .
