Independence Day in Vicenza
Saturday, July 4, 2009
Vicenza, Italy
On July 4th, just days before Obama arrives in Italy for the G8 summit, Vicenza will celebrate its own "Independence Day," that is, independence from the U.S. military! After three years of determined opposition to the construction of a new base in their city, the people of Vicenza show no signs of letting up. They have called for a national demonstration with a protest march that will literally surround the site of the new base.

USC4P&J has already sent in our endorsement, but the best way to show our support is obviously being there! Please let us know if you plan to participate and we can decide together the best way to get there: info [at] peaceandjustice.it
Troops from Vicenza were the first to parachute into Iraq, have been deployed to Afghanistan and the city is now home to the command for ground troops for AFRICOM, the new U.S. Africa Command (because no African country would have them!) Everything we've been protesting against departs from Vicenza. Let's support the people trying to stop it!
On the No Dal Molin web site, you can read a translation of the appeal for the July 4th national demonstration, see a list of endorsing groups and a map of the march route.
If you would like to record a video endorsement in support of the protest (English is fine!), please upload the video to youtube and send the link to comunicazione [at] nodalmolin.it Videos will be posted on the No Dal Molin web site.
See a brief history of the No Dal Molin movement in English, including a timeline.
See you in Vicenza. Viva l'indipendenza!

Your entry contains several factual errors-
1, the US Base in Vicenza is not "new" it has been there since 1945, its a small expansion to the base and no extension to the existing air strip that is not used by the US army (the base is an Italian Military base commanded by an Italian Colonel)
2. the 173rd Airborne were not the "first troops to parachute into Iraq"
3. The US Army African Command is based in Stuttgart, Germany not Vicenza, Italy
You should make a rudimentary effort to check your facts before you publish crap. By the way the base expansion was approved by both the left-wing govt of Prodi and again his successor Berlasconi the right wing fella. It is creating 1,200 more family-wage jibs for Italian covilians in the local economy. It is opposed by a smattering of finge groups mainly from other cities in italy.

1. It is a new U.S. base being built in what was partially a small Italian base and the local civilian airport. There is no need to talk of the air strip as it has been completely demolished in preparation for the construction work. "Expansion" is a strange term to use for an entirely new facility 9 km away from the existing base of Camp Ederle. And "small" doesn't really describe the project for a total area of 19.7 acres, more than 40 buildings over 75 feet in height, 140,000 square feet of military vehicle maintenance and repair facilities, 860,000 square feet of parking for more than 1,000 heavy vehicles and 2 multi-story parking garages with a capacity of more than 1,600 automobiles.
2. Funny, according to the 173rd, they parachuted into Iraq on March 26, 2003: http://www.173abnbde.setaf.army.mil/history.htm Someone should let them know that apparently isn't true.
3. Again, someone needs to tell the commanders at the existing base in Vicenza that they are not the command for ground troops in Africa, because it's all over their web site: http://www.usaraf.army.mil/
