SF8 - Herman Bell Pleads Guilty to Reduced Charge of Voluntary Manslaughter
I was happy to be one of over 50 people in court yesterday to support Herman Bell, one of the SF8.
Herman has been in prison his entire adult life, and has spent the last two and a half years in a single cell, 23 hours a day, with no outside light or air, eating terrible jail food the entire time. If he had insisted on going to trial with the rest of the 8, he could have spent another two years in the same conditions. The agreement with the prosecution included his immediate return to New York where he will be able to join general population and begin his fight for parole. This is an excellent outcome for Herman, and one which does not adversely affect the other defendants. The full agreement was read in open court, and specified that he will not testify against anyone else in this case.
Hundreds of you came out for what was supposed to be the beginning of the preliminary hearings on June 8th. The actual beginning of the preliminary hearing at 850 Bryant Street is now supposed to be next Monday, July 6th. There will be another email notice about exact times. Hope to see you there.
In Solidarity, Scott
