On April 11th , two volunteers with Modesto Needle Exchange were ticketed with misdemeanor charges of distributing drug paraphernalia. The charges came in the wake of a Stanislaus County Sheriff undercover sting investigation against the group. Modesto Needle Exchange operated out of Mono park in the Airport District of unincorporated Modesto. The park was known for having a high amount of heroin use, and dirty needles could be found throughout the area. Modesto Needle Exchange was started in order to first get dirty needles off the streets of Modesto and also to stop the circulation of dirty needles between users. The use of dirty needles for the injection of drugs is the leading cause of the spread of Hepatitis C in the central valley and also greatly contributes to the spread of HIV/AIDS. Modesto Needle Exchange would exchange dirty needles and give the same amount back in clean needles, thus eliminating the amount of dirty needles in circulation.

On Thursday, June 11th, at 8:15 AM, two members of Modesto Needle Exchange will go before court at the Stanislaus County Courthouse at Department 12. The City of Modesto is trying to criminalize those who would fight against the spread of disease in poor areas of Modesto. We must stand in solidarity with those who would do this work and risk arrest. Show solidarity with Brian and Christie! Drop the charges now, free the Mono Park 2!

1. The use of dirty needles for the
injection of drugs is the leading cause of the spread of Hepatitis C in the
central valley.

This statement could be incorrect. Though what other way could be the reason for a high rate of Hep. C in the Central Valley?

2. Modesto Needle Exchange would exchange dirty needles and give the same
amount back in clean needles, thus eliminating the amount of dirty needles
in circulation.

Automatically, we were starting folks off with 20 syringes to last them 2 weeks before the next exchange. Just verifying that.

3. The City of Modesto is trying to criminalize those who would fight against
the spread of disease in poor areas of Modesto. Last mistake. It wasn't the city, it was the county sheriffs that criminalized us.
