Point Arena Sustainable Fisheries Reality Tour

On Saturday, June 13, come on over to Point Arena for the Sustainable Fisheries Reality Tour, hosted by Recreational Fishing Alliance, Mendocino Seaweed Stewardship Alliance, Mendocino County Fish & Game Advisory Committee, local fishermen and seaweed harvesters.

Abalone Diving and Seaweed Harvest: Beginning at nine A.M., down Point Arena Lighthouse Point Road, come to the flat place on the bluff and see what is happening on a rare low-tide, in-season day for abalone, fish, sea palm tips, and other sustainable food from the ocean! John Lewallen will talk about trimming sea palm tips here for thirty years, and Jim Martin will talk about sustainable abalone harvesting.

Main Event at City Hall: At eleven A.M.the Sustainable Fisheries Testimony/ Press Conference event will begin at Point Arena City Hall/ Veterans Hall, on Highway 1 at the north entrance to town. Lead speakers include community activist Allan Jacobs, Fish & Game Advisory Commissioner Craig Bell, and Point Arena Harbormaster Peter Bogdahn. The event is focused on potential Point Arena community impacts of Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Marine Protected Areas scheduled to be adopted by the California State Fish & Game Commission this August.

Many elected public officials have been invited. “Public Officials Respond” onstage at one P.M. at City Hall.

Head for the Point Arena Pier after three in the afternoon! Watch people bringing essential food from the ocean!

Freshly harvested seafood will be offered throughout the June 13 event. Sharon Garner & Billy Schieve Trio make music for sustainable seafood harvest from eleven to one at City Hall.

Free admission; contributions for expenses accepted.
