polk street gentrification ... the latest saga
The latest chapter in our reign of gentrification of Polk St is the Streetscape Improvements program.
The latest chapter in our reign of gentrification of Polk St is the Streetscape Improvements program. We've got the city removing perfectly healthy trees and replacing them with ornate landscaping so we can jack up rent, while they continue to cut services to the poor! Muhahahah. Oh, and of course with any plan, our leading members get an exception and don't have to follow it if their expensive trees don't fit the landscaping plan.
Loud Pesky Nuisance. Whining about poor people & city life since 2001.
Come to our next meeting where we'll brainstorm new ways to criminalize poverty and make polk st unaffordable! and don't forget to check out our shiny new polk st poverty court!
p.s. we aren't supposed to mention this, and it might not do anything to stop us, but you can comment about this whole affair to the mayor, your supervisor or fax the DPW at 415-695-2147 or email at the site linked above.

Yes, Polk Street is not the one I knew and fell in love with years ago. It is now a pathetic contrast of the beautiful and the ugly. The beautiful people don't like to be looked at, challenged, or ignored. They want to be worshiped and generally have their way. They are the true ugly. The sad, poor are in extremely bad shape. I count so many people sleeping on the streets at night that I can't bear to view it much anymore. These are not bad people! Increasingly, there are people who have completely lost their minds. I can't give out enough food, coins, or encouragement for all. On the other hand, I attended a Polk Neighbors meeting (there is lower, middle, and upper and they meet at various venues, often at a coffee shop on Polk). It was innocent enough. People bitched about graffiti, hoes, and loud clubbing. The officials who attended seemed like the real problem. They offered no solutions and I was left thinking that there needs to be an alternative to this model.
