In the final days of the Bush Administration, the Department of Interior released a new 5 year plan for offshore oil and gas developments in the OCS, Outer Continental Shelf. That was after the Democratic controlled congress allowed a near 30 year ban on offshore drilling to lapse, amongst cries that more domestic oil production would lower the cost of high gas prices.
In the wake of the new Obama Administration, the 5 year offshore oil and gas plan has been amended to include alternative energy development, and a 6 month time period for public comment. Public comment ends in September, 2009. The Department of Interior wrapped up a series of regional hearings on the issue to take public, political and industry input. The Pacific West Coast hearing in San Francisco, CA sent a resounding "NO" to offshore oil and gas drilling. Hundreds of Northern California residents packed a meeting hall to oppose offshore drilling, including Mendocino County residents Judith Vidaver and Rachel Binah, who successfully who successfully defeated a similar proposal 20 years ago.
