Access to Water Means Safety for Women in Africa Pt. I

by Stanford Rally Report
54 Stanford women students and eight young men carried buckets in a campus march to promote the cause of an organization working for access to water in Africa. Women, who bear the brunt of water hauling in African communities, are endangered when they must carry water for many miles over many hours on a daily basis. They are unable to attend school and are often at risk of sexual assault as they travel back and forth to water sources. Improved water supply can also promote the cause of world peace, said the founder of Nuru International, the organization behind today's event.

Jake Harriman told the gathered marchers and supporters that the true fuel of terrorism is young men and women driven into terrorist groups out of desperation, the desperation of parents too poor to send their children to school, to afford decent housing, or to have access to the commodity that we call "water". To combat extreme poverty is to further the cause of world peace.

The money raised by this event will fund the drilling of four deep wells in Kuria, Kenya, as well as begin the engineering of rain water harvesting projects for African homes. Additional funding will be directed toward deep well drilling projects in Malawi and elsewhere.

Raging Grannies helped students lift buckets aloft. There is a trick to it, using a wrapped cloth on top of the head as a kind of stabilization cushion.

This was actually a second march, as earlier in the morning the students made the long march across the campus.
