National demonstrations are scheduled in more than fifty cities across the country on April 11th to protest the government’s handling of the economic crisis. The demonstrations are organized by the recently launched group A New Way Forward. They are calling on the government to take three main actions on the country’s banks: nationalize, reorganize and decentralize.

The website for A New Way Forward listed a rally at the County Offices in Santa Cruz.

When people came for the rally, they were disappointed to find out that no rally was taking place.

I got there and initially saw two people, Natasha and David, each of them holding a homemade sign. Natasha told us, that someone told her, that the person who posted the rally call for Santa Cruz was based in San Francisco. The initiator for the Santa Cruz rally did not show up.

Natasha, 75 years old, drove about an hour each way to travel from Hollister to Santa Cruz for the rally. She remained in positive spirits the entire time and talked about the recent activity of progressive organizations in Hollister, a city in, and the county seat of, San Benito County.

Brandon, a senior at UC Santa Cruz, rode his bike to the Santa Cruz County Building. He discussed his desire to find a stable job and remain in Santa Cruz after he graduates.

David, Richard and I shared some of our views on activism, organizing and the community in Santa Cruz.

Two more people, a sister and brother, also drove up to us in the parking lot of the County Building and asked about the rally. Natasha and David said that there were also other people also came and left before I arrived.

The main outreach for the event was the posting on the website for A New Way Forward, and it said that over 100 people plan to attend. It was a little disappointing to find out that there was no rally, and the initiator of the event was apparently based in SF and did not even show up. However, it was very nice speaking with Natasha, David, Brandon and Richard.

Natasha reminded us that she was 75 years old and told us to keep on struggling. She advised us to form organizations and make postive change. I believe those are good words to live by.

The folks in SF sounded disappointed on their indybay comments even though there were ~200 people who picketed at the Fed, but I was there and it was really good to see what people thought. This was a first go round for what looks like a nascent movement with tendrils connecting it to anticapitalism and democratic control over the economy. I was jazzed and I think that there is tremendous potential in bringing people with real grievances together around how capitalism is the problem. Glad that you all were there and look forward to seeing if the ANWF/anti-bank ideas can be connected to other movements, especially MayDay and the movements against borders and for free movement of workers.
