San Francisco, CA

The world economic crisis has shattered the free-market consensus that has dominated politics for the last generation. Meanwhile, the end of the conservative era and the election of the first African American president have raised expectations among working people that long overdue change is at hand. With capitalism in crisis, even some in the mainstream media are admitting that Karl Marx was right.

There has never been a better time for those who want to see fundamental change to get together to debate, discuss and organize for a new society—a society based on the needs of the many instead of the whims of a few. We need to organize a new left to meet the challenge of this new era.

That’s the purpose that Socialism 2009—expanded to two sites this year—has set for itself. Gather with activists from around the world to take part in dozens of discussions about changing the world: How can we end racism? What kind of organization do we need? What would a future socialist society look like?

Yes we can organize for socialism in the 21st century! ¡Sí se puede!

...And of course there's nothing wrong with this. But a little ideological truth-in-packaging law should apply on this, and they should mention it here on the indybay.org listing.

I went to the Women's Building this morning to check out the bit on anarchism. Like upwards of 15% of the wage slave class in California these days I am out of work, in my case for more than for a year, so I couldn't pay to get in, and I assumed there would be one of those"no one turned away for lack of funds" provisos. But I was told that all the "scholarships" were gone, and that you had to pre-register for them. The "scholarship" thing is ironically appropriate, given the exclusively college-student orientation of the ISO, and the pedantic air this group adopts in their effort to sell skim-milk Trotskyism to callow left-liberal youth.

I see this socialism conference is not on the labor page. That is in keeping with their exclusion of workers who cannot afford this conference. Anyone who wants to attend should be able to do so, even if they cannot afford it. They can take up a collection during the dinner or at any other time to help pay for renting the Women's Building. There are lots of people attending who can afford to pay more than $10 a session or $35 a day, and they could and would contribute more if asked. Any socialist organization that is oriented towards college students is not a serious socialist organization. Socialist organizations must always be based in the workingclass.
