Marriott Workers Settle Contract, Other Hotel Employees in South Bay Continue Struggle
On March 16, San Jose Marriott workers approved a contract with the hotel after months of stalled negotiations and demonstrations in front of the hotel. The new contract reduces housekeeping workloads, maintains affordable health care, and provides solid wage increases. It also creates protections for immigrant workers who make up the majority of the housekeeping staff.

From a press release from the union representing the workers came these words of celebration:
"At a time of increasing economic turmoil and distress, Marriott workers' lives will be moving forward. This was a hard-fought victory not only for workers but for the entire community in Silicon Valley."
Meanwhile, employees of the Hilton San Jose and Crowne Plaza (same ownership and management) are still in the middle of negotiations with their employer. Management has proposed removing part-time workers from eligibility for health care, sick days, and pension, and freezing the hourly wages of employees who receive tips for two years.
Local activists are gearing up to be involved in these struggles with the workers as well.
