Home Care Workers Protest Cuts

OAKLAND - Protesters decried budget cuts to home care workers in front of the State Building in Oakland, on Friday, March 27, 2009. SEIU, which organized the protest, claimed that the California budget passed in February contains $1 billion in "trigger cuts" to home care, health care, higher education, SSI/SSP, and CalWORKS.

The Oakland protest was part of a day of action organized by SEIU that included a rally at the Capitol Building in Sacramento and in five other cities.

"When legislators buried these 'trigger cuts' deep in the February budget agreement, they were counting on not having to take responsibility for their decision to make such unpopular cuts. We're coming to our leaders' front doors to demand they accept responsibility for their decisions that will harm the elderly, the sick, people with disabilities, struggling families, and students," said Paula Cantera, a home care provider in Napa County.

The home care workers weren't alone. "If our leaders can find a way to enrich corporations with billions in shameless giveaways, they can find a way to protect our seniors an people with disabilities, " said Gary Passmore, Executive Director of the Congress of California Seniors.

"For those of us who rely on home care, this budget is about survival. It's about whether we can get through the day safely," said Michelle Rousey, Chair of the Public Authority Advisory Board for In-Home Support Services. Rousey joined the Oakland protest with a contingent from Action for In-Home Support Services, an advocacy group for both clients and workers.

A good place to start cutting are the recent pay raises that the State Legislature and Governor got not long ago! The legislature can set a sunset date for luxury items such as boats, jewelry over $500, wall-mounted plasma TVs, expensive music systems, video equipment over and above $1,000...excess should be taxed for a short term until our economy recovers.

Tax race tracks, bingo games, card rooms...set sunset dates.

Did you know that people buy luxury boats outside of CA, wait the time required, that way the rich can dodge paying taxes on their luxury ships/boats. Tax companies that take their businesses off-short to avoid paying taxes! Many loop holes can be filled! Maggie Dee

It's sad to see how small this protest was. The reason - SEIU taking over UHW, and SEIU Prez Andy Stern's healthcare deal with the Governator a couple years back. If the Governor does succeed in cutting homecare wages it will be because of SEIU and Andy Stern's hostile takeover of the healthcare workers union which has always lead the fight against Arnold.

Oakland is one of the counties where homecare workers are represented by the United Long Term Care Workers Union(or 6434), which is the undemocratic SEIU controlled homecare and nursing home union based out of Los Angeles.

NUHW, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, is putting up a better fight over this than SEIU. This despite the fact that UHW union members are having their dues robbed by SEIU and used against them, instead of for fighting the Governor's wage cuts...

I don't know who is sicker - the Governor or the SEIU President Andy Stern...

These cuts can not be allowed to happen. We must fight for our patients, and for our union like never before...
