Raging Grannies on the line at San Jose Marriott

by Solidarity with Workers
On Friday Feb 27 from noon to 1:00pm Marriott employees came out of the hotel to join a picket line. The hotel is connected to the San Jose McEnery Convention Center so conventioneers abounded. The Raging Grannies bolstered the picketing workers in solidarity!

Raging Grannies in support of Unite HERE local 19. Supporting hotel workers needs...some of the Grannies are former hotel employees too.

Songs the Grannies sang (more below with photos)

Housekeepers' Song
Tune: We Wish You a Merry Christmas

We're HOUSE-keepers cleaning rooms here
We're HOUSE-keepers cleaning rooms here
We're HOUSE-keepers cleaning rooms here
For Marriott guests

We DO a-lot-of heavy LIFT-ing
We DO a-lot-of heavy LIFT-ing
We DO a-lot-of heavy LIFT-ing
And make things look nice

We're food workers serving guests here
We're food workers serving guests here
We're food workers serving guests here
And give the guests cheer

We're main-ten-ance men and women
We're main-ten-ance men and women
We're main-ten-ance men and women
With families to raise

We're just asking for a contract
We're just asking for a contract
We're just asking for a contract
With fair-ness for all!

*Happy Profits*
Tune: Happy Birthday

Happy profits for you
Happy profits for you
Happy profits, happy profits
Happy profits for you

We meet here to say
We're deserving some pay
We're deserving some pay
And some programs today

We work hard and long
So we say in this song
So we say in this song
You must help us along

La Cucaracha

Protect the children
Respect the workers
Working hard to survive
Better conditions and decent treatment
Keep the families’ dream alive

They’re not a burden they are an asset
Helping our economy
Stop separating the kids from parents
Show respect for families.

*Listen to the Workers!*
Tune: Are you Sleeping?

Listen to the workers
Listen to the workers
What do they say
What do they say
Show us some humanity
Show us some humanity
Better Pay
Better Pay!

*Workers for Justice*
Tune: Yellow Rose of Texas

When you exploit your workers
You save a buck or two
But think how you would feel
If it were done to you
When workers have no health care
It’s not just their concern
It hurts the whole community
When they’ve nowhere to turn.

Estamos trabajando por la justicia
Queremos apollarles en su buena lucha
Queremos beneficios para las familias
Vivimos todos juntos en la communidad.

Councilwoman McLeod is the first openly lesbian politician in the South Bay. She serves the city of Santa Clara and has been at more than one Raging Granny action...thanks for coming out in support of workers, Jamie!
