THE PROJECT MEDIA COLLECTIVE

by Tim
The Project is an open collective of UCSC students working together to produce a monthly(ish) newspaper with a focus on radical politics and activism. We believe independent media is crucial for organizing and documenting direct action for social transformation. If you are interested in contributing, meetings are held at 5:00 p.m. on fridays at SubRosa (Pacific and Spruce), and articles/opinion/art/poetry can be submitted to theproject [at] riseup.net.

For too long UCSC has been producing uninformative and incompetent newspapers at best (CHP) and full on racist, homophobic shit at its worst (fishrap)
fishrap fucking sucks, and the only people who find humor in it are the self-satisfied, privileged, racist white men who write it. i know i support it and i also realize that for a "socialist" my political positions regarding the santa cruz bus driver's union and the treatment of the city's homeless has been entirely contradictory the bullshit i spout off about my radical politics, but fuck it. the project is mad hot
by yeah, right!
Liar, you're SO not Rotkin.

what is indybay coming to?? briefly:
1. i lauded the appearance of this publication;
2. i expressed my displeasure at seeing that capitalist vampires smug face yet again, this time on the cover of a supposedly "radical" publication rather than TIME magazine, and while im glad its a critical presenation i think in terms of radicalism we would be better off criticizing the structure of politics itself and its reservation of power into the hands of specialist managers - not specific politicians as such;
3. i pointed out that indesign is really not that difficult to use and tweaking things like spacing and justification, maybe changing a few fonts, etc, could have made this a lot more attractive to read with not all that much effort.

what do you think these students are doing in their spare time? you are criticizing that more time should have gone into layout without saying anything about the content, which should speak for itself. and if you are trying to draw a comparison to the obama cover of TIME, you obviously didnt read the Project's cover, or are unable of grasping even the obtuse subtlety. If it was your 'radical' newspaper, im sure it would be covered with anarchy A's because you are so radical you cant even conceive of a discourse with any reader who isnt on the page you are... that you assumed this shit is supportive of obama and liberal view of politics shows that you didnt engage any of the material.
by violet
this is productive! let's critique the work that full-time students are doing in their free time. let's argue that the layout isn't catchy enough. but let's completely forget that they are breaking out of their generations mass apathy and critically engaging, not only their campus, but the santa cruz community as well. leftists need to stop bickering and start supporting each other. your comments, "S&S", are by no means a constructive criticism but a petty insult. i'd like to see you do something better.
by s&s
i'm not a leftist, i dont know what that has to do with my political point which you ignored.

and this is a zine i edited and laid out:
http://sticksandstonesscz.blogspot.com

im not trying to champion it as an aesthetic triumph. i dont know what you mean by 'catchy' layout but i think 'readability' is important especially if you want people to, you know, READ your publication.

but then again, putting obamas face on the cover like that, even with a shephard fairey logo pretty much makes anything unreadable for me...

i did start my first comment with a "congrats on getting this out". i'm not sure why you think anything vaguely associated with "the left" is automatically deserves not to be criticized. really i am glad students are putting this out. theres no need to mar their noble efforts with sloppy graphic design, or sloppy politicking for that matter.

The whole point of putting that "vampire's" face on the cover was because every uc student has been brainwashed by Obama's award-winning marketing campaign. In the same sense that people don't think of soft-drinks, they think of coke, people don't think of liberal political campaigns, they think of brand-obama.

The point was to play on that. chill the fuck out. It's issue one; issue two will be more refined.
by s & s
i see the point about marketing to students, but its still the same heroic portrait of him that hangs on so many dorm room walls already.

"chill the fuck out"? who, me? in fact doesnt page 1 ask for criticisms? if you are going to be putting out a product for the public to peruse and respond to, you should learn to take criticism without viewing it as a fight.
by spawnknots
It's difficult to take criticism when it begins with "what is indybay coming to?"
That is a direct offense, not constructive.
The Project may not be perfect, but it is progress.
