ROME: An influential Catholic magazine has blasted the Italian conservative government's plan to toughen its immigration policy, saying it was similar to Italy's Fascist-era racial laws.
Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said he felt "deeply outraged and offended" by the magazine's "delirious statements."
The Senate recently passed a measure callings on doctors to alert police if they believe they are treating an illegal immigrant.
Famiglia Cristiana said Italy was "plunging into the abyss of racial laws," which were passed in 1938 and restricted the rights of Jews.
The measure must be still approved by the lower chamber.
Famiglia Cristiana is one of Italy's most widely read magazines. It is distributed in parishes across the country.
