New documentary on death penalty, and execution
of Nobel Peace Prize nominee will be screened
Friday at Sacramento State University
SACRAMENTO – The first Northern California screening of a controversial new
documentary on the death penalty – featuring a graphic re-enactment of the
execution of a Nobel Peace Prize nominee in 2005 – will be held at
Sacramento State University (Hinde Hall), Friday at 6:30 p.m. The showing
is part of Black History Month.
NEWS BRIEFING: Members of the ACLU will provide background on the
documentary, and clips of the film, THURSDAY, 10 a.m. at SSU (East Entrance
to Student Union.)
"Tribute," is a powerful documentary that examines the execution of
Stanley Tookie Williams, a Crips Gang co-founder who became a 4-time Nobel
Literature Prize Nominee and 5-time Nobel peace Prize Nominee and winner of
the George W. Bush Call to Service Award.
Jamie Foxx played Williams in an acclaimed movie: "Redemption: The Stan
Tookie Williams Story" in 2004.
Williams' case became an international campaign for clemency after his
children's books and his "Street Protocol for Peace" led to peace between
the Crips and Bloods street gangs. Williams was executed in 2005, in what
was called a "botched" execution.
