The California Supreme Court has announced it will hear oral arguments challenging Proposition 8 on March 5. The Court is required to issue a decision within 90 days, so a same-sex marriage ruling is expected by June.
The California Supreme Court has announced it will hear oral arguments challenging Proposition 8 on March 5. The Court is required to issue a decision within 90 days of hearing the arguments, so a same-sex marriage ruling is expected by June.
At the same time it is expected that the Court will decide the legality of the 19,000 same-sex marriage performed in California between May (after the Supreme Court voided Proposition 22 that banned same-sex mariage) and November, when a small margin of voters approved Proposition 8.
Although public seating at the court location will be limited, activists campaigning to overturn proposition 8 are already making plans to have a presence at this history-making hearing. A live TV broadcast of the session is in the works, and the hearing will be broadcast in an overflow viewing auditorium at the State Office Building.
