Oscar Grant Rebellion in the Streets After Mehserle Granted Bail, Oakland, 1/30/09: photos

by dave id
After it was announced that Mehserle had bail set for his release, demonstrators who had gathered at Oak and 12th Streets moved to the Alameda County Courthouse steps that face Lake Merritt and protested with bullhorns.

Within seconds of this unmarked SUV having its back window smashed, this cop jumped out and began hurling "riot control" devices all over.

Desley Brooks has been supportive of those outraged by BART police abuse and murder: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2009/01/11/18561773.php#18561780. And she has called for the resignation or retirement of DA Orloff: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2009/01/15/18563276.php#18563277

Oakland Police Chief has resigned: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2009/01/27/18566002.php

BART Police Chief Gary Gee has no intention of leaving at this point, and even sent a "stay strong" memo to his officers this week with instruction on how to help Mehserle while he was in prison, sympathies that the poor officers have to endure public and media abuse, and that they will all weather this storm: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=61&entry_id=35227

And how about Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff? http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2009/01/15/18563416.php Does he want to screw up the case against Mehserle on purpose? http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2009/01/30/18567058.php?show_comments=1#18567153

Speaking of phoning it in, Charles Burress, Heather Knight, and the Chronicle should be embarrassed that they actually published this shabby report: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/01/30/BAL715KJPS.DTL&type=printable. There are inaccuracies like ANSWER having organized the bail hearing demo, things that it sounds like they just made up ("several of them said they were angry bail was granted"), and frankly just lazy reporting ("At some point during the protest, police released tear gas" -- at some point?? -- and "The group stopped at a McDonald's parking lot at 14th and Jackson streets" -- is that what happened?). Where these reporters even there? Phoning it in is an understatement.
