Dear Dan,
We're starting 2009 with two ways to make your voice heard on the vital issues that
impact the Klamath River. First, send a one-click email letter [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102418936965&e=001omL6XiGP9ZoZ6-zdiOS-zJq02Niq9_5hJ7_0cZ3sVGrR4wqIpaq1RjW69CdNBViVy9Mpe6Y01f6usJAkh14NYnhNz_Kf61qKyETaZpUKYJXJ-qeJxsyxIdbJtynF5xGha9Sa5tYb4ib4gxNmax9nGXkPwcwSmlu4i50bdhVVBT57l4rezOa1MA==]
to support updated regulations on suction dredge mining on the Klamath - salmon
and steelhead may be thanking you for it come the summer gold mining season!
Second, the Cal. Water Board is taking public comments on PacifiCorp's 401 clean
water permit application until Feb 23rd. Whether or not the Agreement in Principle
on dam removal pans out, we need to keep the pressure on this process! Send a one-click
letter to the Water Board [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102418936965&e=001omL6XiGP9Zr_pb6dnZ2OQu-JQTkMuD_dGjhc48mxaPz7bK2uI8B5qZ_9Jp8wT9YpcpltA_rEhTz8TmOWuOfL18k1XGHIzjOm9dKXTienOI7GWxjPNO_DQOHy6SMY-W8k]
through our website.
Behind the scenes, we're busy watchdogging the AIP process, and finding the best
places to direct public comments to ensure the dams are really removed, and that
environmental laws are followed in the interim. Expect more on this soon.

Time for new rules on suction mining

The threat facing salmon is so dire that regulators are expected to continue the
2008 salmon fishing ban through 2009. So
it seems incredible that in the creeks and tributaries of the state's
major rivers where salmon lay their eggs, suction gold mine dredging
continues under regulations that are now 15 years old. These rules are
badly out of date and inadequate to protect dwindling number of fish.

Tribe seeks to halt suction dredge mining on parts of the Klamath River
"We are not trying to end gold mining or suction dredging, but we
are saying, 'Let's not mine in the places that are most important to
the fish,' " said Craig Tucker, spokesman for the Karuk
tribe.

Klamath County Fuel Tanks Threaten Groundwater, Public Health

After a work crew found a gas pump
on an old dock at Putnam's Point, city officials had to find out for
sure what was underground. If the pump had been connected
to an underground fuel tank, that tank would have to be removed and the
ground tested to make sure no contaminants had leaked into the soil
near Upper Klamath Lake. The city lucked out. Pipes found in the ground led instead
to waterlines, and no tank was found. Department
of Envir on ment a l Q u a l it y records indicate there are 349 known
facilities with underground storage tanks, mostly for fuel, in Klamath
County. Of those, 297 are no longer in use, said Sheila Monroe, tank manager for
the eastern region of the DEQ.

Where's the Snow?

This year's higher amount of snowfall hasn't translated into a larger
snowpack, according to Eric White of the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center.
White said that measurements taken on Dec. 30, 2007 showed 35 inches of
snow on the ground near the treeline, while measurements taken on Dec.
31, 2008 showed only 25 inches. Mt. Shasta snowpack feeds the Klamath and Sacramento
Rivers.
