What Courage Looks Like
If courage were a pin striped suit, Col. Ann Wright would be seen wearing hers every day. Given the US State Department’s Award for Heroism for her actions in evacuating civilians from civil war in Sierra Leon, Col. Wright put her career on the line when, on March 19, 2003, she resigned her State Department post in protest of the Bush Administration’s planned invasion of Iraq. Since then she has picketed at Guantanamo, served on the international impeachment commission, and has been arrested numerous times for non-violent protest of the Bush administration’s policies. Recently she co-authored a book that, according to Daniel Ellsberg “should be leaked into the government.”
Dissent: Voices of Conscience brings us the words of government insiders who have spoken out against the War in Iraq. As Howard Zinn notes “it takes a special courage for men and women inside the government to speak out.” Ann Wright has this special courage. Col. Wright’s website is http://www.voicesofconscience.com
The public will have an opportunity to hear Col. Wright speak on the topic “Abandoning War: A People’s Agenda” on Thursday, February 12, at Hartnell College in the Steinbeck Hall. Doors open at 6:30, talk starts at 7:00. This event is sponsored by the Hartnell College Students for Peace. For information contact LeeAnn at 770-7011 or Deanne at 678-0632. Other appearances for Col. Wright are planned on the Monterey Peninsula. For a schedule contact smscott744 [at] hotmail.com .
