Street Action After Oscar Grant Rally and March, Oakland, 1/7/09: photos & video (2 of 3)

by dave id
After a police car was attacked and riot police fired tear gas at 8th Street and Madison, protesters ran through the streets in small groups, occasionally re-massing until standoffs with police forced them to split into smaller groups again.

The original march numbered in the hundreds, but after the tear gas attack from police the number of protesters remaining was halved overall for the rest of the night.

This first photo was taken after still-active protesters had dispersed west down 8th Street toward Broadway and most of the riot police had moved slowly after them. The two officers who had abandoned their vehicle to marchers stand to the right.

Video of the precipitating escalation with the police cruiser can be found here: https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2009/01/08/18560134.php.

At the end of the first of two short clips here, you can see riot police walking up Washington after the group. Then as the riot police move toward the group, people disperse down 9th east toward Broadway.

The crowd that had scattered down 8th Street and some down 7th Street after the tear gas, began to coalesce and move up Broadway together. Second-hand reports of some arrests on 7th Street between OPD police station and parking lot before stand-off on 9th.

Most businesses in that area of Broadway locked their security gates and closed for the night

The police pushed slowly, but hard, using batons and knocking several people to the ground.

From here, the serious social unrest began...
