Bloomberg's Israel Visit Irks NY Muslims

by IOL (reposted)
NEW YORK — New York City Muslims are outraged that in the midst of a bloody Israeli offensive against the people of Gaza, Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited Israel and threw his support behind its military operation.
"I couldn't believe that Mayor Bloomberg…who has no business, no power over international foreign policy, would even go to that measure of supporting Israel," Linda Sarsour, a NYC Muslim resident, told IslamOnline.net.

Bloomberg held talks earlier this week in Tel Aviv with Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert and his Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

He visited the southern towns of Ashkelon and Sderot to show solidarity of Israeli wounded in Palestinian rocket attacks.

"I think I speak for an awful lot of – almost all – Americans who think that Israel is doing the right thing in defending itself," Bloomberg said.

"This special bond between America and Israel is something that you see evidenced today by the fact that we've come over here."

At least 800 Palestinians, including 220 children and 89 women, have been killed and more than 3125 wounded since Israel launched its Operation Cast Lead on December 27.

A massive wave of air, sea and land bombardment has scores of homes, schools and mosques to the ground.

"By going there and supporting the Israeli bombing of Gaza, that does not bring harmony and understanding for us as New Yorkers, or for all New Yorkers," insists Ghazi Khankan of the American Muslim Alliance.

Some 300 people representing different groups, including NYC Labor Unions Against the War, braved freezing cold on Wednesday to protest the Israel visit.

They demonstrated outside the New York's City Hall and threw shoes at a blown-up picture of Mayor Bloomberg.

Anarchist historians can tell me if this is just apocryphal, but Michael Bakunin is reputed to have said something like "Every politician has earned his death sentence 1,000 times over." If he did, in fact, say that, he was probably thinking of people like Michael Bloomberg, as well as virtually every important politician in IsraHell and the United Snakes of AmeriKKKa today.
