Sham Election Denounced by Fresno Elected Officials
Elected officials in Fresno denounced a sham election that is taking place to merge several Service Employees International Union (SEIU) locals into what would be the largest union in the world under Washington-appointed leadership. The press conference, featured in the video below, was organized by SEIU-United HealthCare Workers West. Speaking are Henry R. Perea, Chairman of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors, Cal Johnson, Trustee with the Fresno Unified School District, Larry Moore, Trustee with the Fresno Unified School District, and John Wilkins, a health care consumer.
What s wrong with SEIU s advisory vote?
SEIU is conducting an election to determine the fate of 350,000 SEIU members California. Either option on the ballot would dismantle United Healthcare Workers, silencing caregivers’ criticism of national SEIU officials backroom deals with employers that hurt healtheare workers and our patients.
UHW members are boycotting the election because SEIU’s rigged process has given them no other way to register their opinions about SEIU’s proposed dramatic reorganization of UHW and two other SEIU locals. UHW members also have filcd a legal challenge against the election. Here’s how SElL officials stacked the deck to guarantee the outcome they want:
• No real choice—The ballot offers two options, with no way to reject both. Under the first option, 65,000 UHW members would be forced into another union. Under the second, UHW’s charter would he revoked and all 150,000 UHW members would he forced into another union Either outcome would remove healthcare workers from elected leadership positions and replace them with Washington appointees.
• Unequal notice to local unions — SEIU leaders gave a head start to locals whose appointed leaders and trustees are allied with SEIU’s top leaders. This allowed Local 6434 to begin a phone campaign to persuade members to vote for the merger days before SEIU even informed UHW that the election would take place.
• Unequal access to information — SEIU has mailed information to eligible voters that misrepresents UHW members’ position on the vote, while refusing to allow UHW to use the same mailing list. That denies UHW members the right to participate equally in campaigning.
• “Pooled” ballot count — Rather than allow members of each local union to decide separately whether they want to merge, ballots cast by the 350,000 members of all three local unions (UHW, Local 6434 and Local 52 1) will be counted together. Pooled voting means that even if every member of one union voted against a proposal, they could still be outvoted by members of other unioiis.
• Misrepresenting UHW’s position - The voter guide falsely implies that the second ballot option reflects UHW’s suggestions. UHW asked that members he given a choice of joining UHW, not a new healthcare workers union with unelected leadership. SEIU did not allow UHW to review the voter guide before it was mailed to 350,000 voters.
• False statements about effect of merger — SElU campaign material falsely states that a merger would not affect current collective bargaining agreements. In fact, in a pooled vote on a 2006 merger, several thousand healthcare workers in California lost their collective bargaining rights when employers successfully challenged the legality of the vote.
• Election misconduct — SEIU’s election officer changed the rules of the process after voting had already begun, in a transparent effort to allow staff to interfere with balloting and artificially increase the sham election’s paltry turnout. We have also heard reports that representatives from other SEIU local unions have asked workers who already voted once to request a new ballot so they can vote again, in obvious violation of democratic principles.

As they have been such a negative factor in local politics over many past years, I don't care if this chapter of SEIU is torn down. I support unions but have to say that community folks should only care about unions and elected officials if they've shown a track record of concern for the community. SEIU-UHW has only been out for itself and has been a big time proponent of the "status quo". While it cannot be argued that they've done some good stuff at the state level it also cannot be argued that, time after time, they've endrosed terrible elected officials for reelection. I'm from West Fresno and have many relatives in Southeast Fresno- what are we supposed to think about SEIU-UHW when they endorse elected officials whose representation has been entirely negligent and self-serving? Dan ronquillo was just out for himself and enjoyed SEIU's support. Cynthia Sterling has been an embarrassment and SEIU wanted another 4 years for this lady who is barely functioning. Same with Sal Quintero and Mike Dages on the other side of town. How does SEIU expect the community to feel when they are endorsing the very same elected officials that are doing so much damage by not giving our areas the pro active representation we deserve? Of course, Mr. Rhodes will answer with his patent style of talking down to me but he has no idea what life is like on the West and East sides of town and how much damage these locally elected officials have done with both their actions and incaction. Me and my family will start caring about SEIU when SEIU starts caring about us and stops trying to buy elections for elected officials who have done little to merit the support.
The staff and members of SEIU-UHW worked tirelessly to help 10,000 home care workers organize their union, which took them from earning minimum wage to a job that pays over $10 an hour, with some members now receiving health benefits for themselves. Unions in general and SEIU-UHW in particular represent the interests of poor and working people in this community, improving their lives and strengthening the fabric of the community. Unions are the strongest counter balance we have to the constant pressure corporations inflict upon us as they squeeze more profit from each worker. This relentless pursuit of profit has led to factory jobs being shipped overseas, deregulation in the financial sector, the mortgage crisis, and now the biggest financial crisis most of us have ever seen.
Tom Jefferson (if that is his real name) says that the union represents the status quo. That is ridiculous! SEIU-UHW supports political candidates who take a stand for the rights of working people. I wish that having politicians who stand up for the working class was the status quo in this town, but it is not. SEIU-UHW encourages men and women to stand together and defend their interests and they support politicians who believe in fairness, justice, and the American way. There is nothing wrong with that.
We all have an interest in understanding what forces are at work to undermine the interests of working people. That is why I encourage you to find out for yourself what is going on with the sham elections held by the International to destroy SEIU-UHW. On Thursday, December 11, scores of UHW members protested outside a Los Angeles hotel where Andy Stern's phony election ballots were being counted.
The sham election gave us only two false choices, both of which would end UHW as we know it.
"We took over 125,000 petitions and protest cards in to the election officer," said Mary Corson from Kaiser Panorama City. "We're here for the long haul."
Less than 25,000 out of 309,000 eligible voters cast ballots - despite SEIU's changes to election rules more than halfway through the election in an effort to increase turnout.
The sham election gave us only two false choices, both of which would end UHW as we know it.

Aww ... remember the good ol' days when SEIU's leadership was honest and they were all fighting the good fight? There was a minor victory concerning the bookstore chain known as Borders. In San Francisco, I remember brave and organized union members blocking intersections in the 90's ... all for better contracts and things of that nature. There was so much promise. After all the economy had shifted away from manufacturing jobs and now was primarily an information and a service economy. So, it was great to see a union finally come along and organize for service workers. So, for the nurses and for the skilled portion of the service sector, SEIU was so strong.
Now, on a national and international level ... and so locals ... it seems the union has been taken over by elitists who no longer believe in grassroots organizing or in maintaining an open and democractic process. They prefer to let a chore of people decide things and then to foist those decisions on the others later. This is the basic complaint. You can't do this. You can't make people vote on the bylaws that they haven't read. You can't go behind closed doors with mayors and corporate leaders, make deals and then force the terms of those deals on the rank n file. You can't hire a bunch of trust-fund brats to come out to your area and pose as your union reps. This all has to stop. SEIU, all up and down, has got to become more transparent ... more pro-active ... more democratic ... more inclusive. I am currently a dues paying member of another local ... and, yes, I know there has been apathy among the rank n file ... but, who's fault is that? The leadership of my local and their hired "professional" union staff are very inneffective at including us and they are very willing to meet with Gavin Newsome and declare some sort of half-baked victory for the workers.
We need real unions now. We need healthcare unions made up of healthcare workers. We need "locals" that are run by local workers. Why is this not more obvious to everyone?
