Chicago, Cook County threaten to cut ties with Bank of America over Republic workers

by PWW (reposted)
CHICAGO — City aldermen and Cook County commissioners vowed to cut ties with Bank of America if it didn't give 250 sit-in strikers the pay they were due. Workers occupying the Republic Windows and Doors factory, labor and religious leaders and community activists flanked the elected officials at City Hall.
The workers began occupying the factory Dec. 5 after Bank of America refused a $5 million line of credit to the company, which was then forced to close. The workers are owed at least $1.6 million in vacation and severance pay and health benefits. Refusal by the company to meet with the workers sparked the takeover.

"We stand in solidarity with the workers peacefully occupying the factory. Bank of America received $34 billion from the Federal Government for the bailout. They are not using it to issue new loans, but instead to buy other assets and expand their financial empire, said Alderman Joe Moore, who was joined by 14 other Aldermen. "We can refuse to do business with Bank of America, withdraw all our funds and deposits and make no zoning changes until BA treats these workers right."

Speakers said it was outrageous that BA had been profited so much off business with the city and yet left the company and workers high and dry. They called for an investigation, including by the mass media, into how Bank of America was spending the bailout money.

"They are using it to invest in companies overseas, said Alderman Scott Waguespack. "All we ask is that they invest in workers here. Put the money back into Republic and let the workers get the money they have coming."

§Religious leaders rally for Republic workers
by PWW (reposted)
CHICAGO — Religious leaders and board members with the Interfaith Worker Justice rallied here in front of the Republic Windows and Doors factory Dec. 9 in solidarity with 250 unionized workers who have been leading a sit-in there since the plant closed down on Dec. 5.

“We’re here to stand with these workers to support them in their struggle for justice,” said Rev. Nelson Johnson to the World. Johnson is co-president and board member of the Interfaith Worker Justice and is also the vice-president of the Pulpit Forum in Greensboro, N.C.

“And we’re here to specifically help the workers get the payments and respect that they deserve, and to retain their jobs,” added Johnson.

The 10 million members of the AFL-CIO stand in solidarity with over 200 members of the United Electrical Workers who, in championing their own rights, are taking on the rampant corporate abuse of workers across this country during dire economic times. These workers' peaceful occupation of the shuttered Republic Windows and Doors plant in Chicago has put Washington and Wall Street on notice that working people have had enough. We applaud President-elect Barack Obama's support for the workers' demands to receive the vacation time and severance pay that they have earned. Republic and its creditors should meet immediately with these workers to honor their reasonable demands.

Our nation cannot afford to bail out banks and investment firms while leaving workers behind. Only weeks after taking $25 billion in federal bailout money, Bank of America has refused to extend a line of credit to Republic, preventing the workers from either keeping their jobs or receiving severance pay. Bank of America's deplorable behavior is but one symptom of a financial industry that sets its bottom line above the heads of working people. Like so many Wall Street titans, Bank of America took billions in government handouts on the premise that they would extend credit to businesses so that working people could keep their jobs. The striking workers at the Republic plant are rightfully holding them to their promise.

No worker should have to face the loss of his or her job with three days' notice, especially in the midst of the holiday season. As millions of our fellow Americans struggle to make ends meet this winter without a job, Congress cannot afford to remain complacent any longer. Working families are in urgent need of a major jobs-producing economic stimulus now. If our leaders are serious about saving the middle class, then we need an economic agenda that will support good, green jobs like the ones at Republic and hold our financial institutions accountable for their actions.
