"hopefully this will mean a resolution in which upper campus isnt going to be destoyed."
or the university will just lie, the tree-sitters will come down, they will say no negotiation was ever reached, and the forest will go and the vivisection lab will come.

or maybe, just maybe, the UC system is so broke, they are completely de-funding the new lab? could it be, that by offering to settle the protest UC is just attempting to make themselves look good to the public, by playing nice with the tree-people, when the real isue is a multi million dollar budget shortfall at UCSC? just a shot in the dark from out in never-neverland...
UCSC is dreaming if they think there will be a mutually agreeable resolution by winter break (which is less than two weeks away).
They sent this email out so that the masses, the students, can feel good about leaving campus and all going home and when they come back to UCSC on January 6th and the tree sitters have been extracted, the banners taken down, and the protest silenced...they will believe that there was a negotiation that led to a resolution.
Nope. Winter break is the time that UCSC will strategically make their move, because the students will be gone.

The tree sitters are done, and everyone knows it.
They have scant support or supporters. They could barely get anyone to show up to commemorate the 1 year anniversary. Their gatherings during Thanksgiving week were a wash.
It's over. And they know it. So they've decided to preserve the facade of having influence by "negotiating" their departure. The reality is that if they don't negotiate their departure, they're simply going to wither up and go away due to lack of interest.
I'd personally support a 2-minute time limit on the negotiations that ended with a chain saw if the decision was to stay up.

the administration approached the tree sitters about mediation. the tree sitters aren't giving up.
I never commented on who brokered the idea of negotiating...did I?
But I consider it irrelevant in any case. The campus did a good job of largely ignoring the tree sit and letting the few supporters run out of steam. There's little support for them amongst the student body.
...and if the campus were to do some advertising to the students about how much money they've had to spend on security guards to stop the vandalizing of adjacent buildings, I suspect the students would chase the tree sitters away themselves.

My question is what will the tree sitters be willing to compromise on. From what I have read they are all or nothing. I may be confused but that is what I have gathered from earlier psotings.
Jennifer Squires wrote in the Sentinel, "Both sides hope to reach an agreement before winter break begins, though neither group would say what terms would need to be met to end the standoff. The final day of fall quarter is Dec. 11."

Well the mediation is over. Both parties agreeing to withdraw since no middle ground could be found.
so the mediation ended and school is over. probably means that ucsc is going to attack the tree sit soon, when all the students go home and they think nobody is watching. what are we going to do about it?
