George Sisk and ADL Decry Cartoon Stereotypes: But What About the Israel Lobby's Cartoons?

by IRmep
George Sisk and the ADL are shocked! "Many state-owned/supported Arab/Muslim newspapers and publications in the Middle East and the Gulf countries seem to have a one-track mind when reporting on Israel: Do everything possible to demonize Israel by perpetuating centuries-old anti-Semitic canards and conspiracy theories of Jewish power, control and world domination." But what about the Israel Lobby's cartoon depiction of Arabs? Let's put *that* on the table too.

The ADL and George Sisk are mad about cartoons appearing in the Arab press. Sisk is emphatic and heartfelt in his condemnations (excerpted from "Hateful cartoons poison Arab-Israeli relations"):

"These cartoons clearly cross the line of that which is considered decent and appropriate speech into a realm of anti-Semitic propaganda. Moreover, these cartoons are a constant reminder of the general attitude concerning Israel and Jews that are prevalent in many parts of the Arab/Muslim world.

I suppose these cartoons are supposed to be humorous and make a political statement. And, to many readers, they undoubtedly are humorous. Those people who hold anti-Semitic beliefs and opinions probably bust a gut laughing at the cartoons. There is, however, absolutely nothing humorous about them. And the statement made is one of hate."

It is true that hateful cartoons hurt. Americans and Arabs might take the ADL and Sisk's stern admonishment to heart if the Israel lobby hadn't been so complicit in past decades advancing racial stereotypes and conspiracy theories of its own in endless propaganda campaigns in the US.

Over at the Israel Lobby Archive, many painful cartoons from AIPAC's 'Near East Report' newsletter reveal an unpleasant history of racial incitement in the US.

The hook-nosed psychotic Arab, fit only for 'Western' scientific examination into the root causes of his sub-human behavior is present. So are the puppeteers and the sterotypical armed and underdeveloped camel jockeys, unable to comprehend modernity. Terrorist Arabs blowing each other up. All of our worst nightmares are there.

The lobby has published hundreds—many much worse than this. Of course, some viewers probably thought they were funny. After all, the butt of the joke are only Arabs. Sisk is right to be angry, but so are Arab commentators. But only when we begin to examine root causes, real grievances, without the fog of sanctimonious propaganda, will hard truths truly begin to emerge.
