Dear Dan,
Can we restore the Klamath? Yes we can! Tribal people and others are sending
the message loud and clear: PacifiCorp's environmental injustice
cannot continue on our river. Now it's time to send your message. [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ASegXHSp3ot1hSXcLgOmzmkYTy2tlXwxx-EL5CMT8luFD2343xaemDubdrRa4hTS3A9VGuwPGsitS9tS_0wqCp5oief8wf_C-UcTToyfQZNxeShHQimtEV7Iros0hbmY]

then tell your friends to do the same. Help us reach our goal of 5,000
public comments on this issue - endless pressure, endlessly applied
will bring these dams down.
Thanks to everyone who came to the hearings this month, and especially to new Klamath
Riverkeeper Board member Dania Rose Colegrove (pictured above) from Hoopa, CA.
Dania put some serious miles on her rig to dip toxic algae out of Iron Gate Reservoir
and deliver it to the Water Board at the dams' clean water hearings in Sacramento
and Eureka. Klamath Riverkeeper is working hard to support the work of community
organizers like Dania, we hope you'll continue to join us [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ASegXHSp3otCvasigrwErjHBcVqtJVzunsKMcB0Pi_MShDLfTRQlKD4zU0PdQUl6eE6EibxsXfWLm5toFcDsVt1fknbwoinUsXxIwTvyfMZnzhuJhxOFmuB4jyt3ys2t4J50s8-ktZ8=]

Hundreds Speak Out Against Clean Water Permit for Klamath Dams

Klamath River advocates packed a room Monday to urge state water quality regulators
to turn down a permit for several hydropower dams and save the salmon and the salmon
culture of the basin. The State Water Resources Control Board is charged with examining
the effects the dams have on water quality, and how dismal water quality on the
river effects fish, wildlife and the people who depend on the Klamath. The permit
under consideration is a requirement for dam owner Pacificorp to get a new license
and continue operating its project. Dania Colegrove, a Yurok tribal member, presented
a stark reminder of the river's health: A 5-gallon jug full of fluorescent green,
algae-thick water taken from behind Iron Gate Dam.

Waterkeepers Alliance's Robert F. Kennedy: Next EPA Head?

In an interview with the Huffington Post,
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. -- reportedly under consideration by Barack Obama
to head the Environmental Protection Agency -- said that if asked, he
would serve... Kennedy, an
environmental lawyer and son of the late senator and attorney general
Robert F. Kennedy, has long championed a cleaner water supply for New
York City. As an officer and attorney for the environmental watch group
Riverkeeper, Kennedy has taken on governments and companies for
polluting the Hudson River and Long Island Sound. Huffington Post - 11/5/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ASegXHSp3ov7DNxsZK79Timb_1N5wlfloMeRmLJpWFjzA8QWIZe3XCzr1C-TX0N0K2TLMPxcGncVOLPFYSe0jCNdrue1FLcr0JH_OWM2cpEYBPzqf2vbMszNUEZBBvcZO8fh4LQXe-osihx-3V74RMY6bm-2Jpz9giJe7guVa7rdJIvl5RhwwnNnHKLyaumw]

Siskiyou Supervisors Fail to Pass Anti-Dam Ordinance

Siskiyou County supervisors did not vote an another ordinance opposing
the removal of Klamath River dams last week because of concerns of
county officials.
A decision on the first reading of a draft ordinance adding a section
to the Siskiyou County Code regarding demolition and reclamation
projects was put off with several members of the board of supervisors
and at least two department heads fearing that the ordinance could
cause "unintended consequences."

Is the Governor Terminating Salmon Surveys?

A coalition of fishing and environmental groups is alarmed that an
executive order by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued earlier this
year could further threaten imperiled populations of Central Valley and
Klamath River salmon. The order, made during the budget impasse between
the Governor and Legislature, terminated temporary help positions from
the state's payroll.
Jeff Shellito of California Trout, Kim Delfino of Defenders of
Wildlife, Zeke Grader of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's
Associations and Paul Mason of Sierra Club California say they believe
this freeze may have adversely affected the ability of the Department
of Fish and Game (DFG) to conduct salmon surveys. These surveys are
needed to forecast appropriate levels of commercial, sport and tribal
harvest of these fish in 2009.

FERC Rep. Notes Most People Opposed to the LNG Project

A public meeting took place in Medford Wednesday
night to allow for public comment over a 230-mile liquefied natural gas
pipeline and terminal that would run from Coos Bay to southern Klamath
County. The Jordan Cove LNG terminal and Pacific Connector pipeline proposal
would transport natural gas from a terminal on the Oregon coast to
California and other West Coast states. Watch Video on KDRV - 10/31/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ASegXHSp3ouSwBQ7iftt6s_r6e9cOM8F0pEJX3kTjln6HL0BXyep2WE6AI_rRU6Hr4GTOCrON0yTglJrj9XvyHlFBkpbemI2_zpJJSHWLxXcq_RNyin-2KWTToL5URWO]
