More Senate News: A Win in New Mexico, Loss in Kentucky
Wednesday, November 5, 2008 : Tom Udall wins the Senate in New Mexico. Great news out of New Mexico tonight, as Rep. Tom Udall has won the race to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Pete Domenici. Udall won a resounding victory over anti-worker Rep. Steve Pearce and will join other AFL-CIO-endorsed candidates as a new U.S. senator.
Udall has a strong record of fighting for working families and co-sponsored the Employee Free Choice Act in the U.S. House. He’ll be an energetic leader for jobs, health care and other essential priorities that have been blocked for too long.
Unfortunately, the chief architect of blocking pro-worker policies in the Senate will be sticking around. AFL-CIO-endorsed candidate Bruce Lunsford fell just short of ousting longtime Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell. A strong union effort had helped put him in contention to defeat the sitting Republican Senate leader.
So far, working families have added four new senators tonight—stay tuned.
