A Victory for People Power … and the Democratic Party Slate Card
Wednesday, November 5, 2008 : San Francisco’s a progressive town. It’s election nights like these that remind us how no matter how much money the Realtors throw in attack ads, and no matter how much we fear the City’s changes spell disaster for lefties, the voters always seem to pull in for us. David Chiu easily won the District 3 Supervisor’s race despite having the most expensive opposition—and while races in Districts 1 and 11 will be finalized via Ranked Choice Voting, Eric Mar and John Avalos both look good.
Progressives kept a majority on the School Board with Sandra Fewer and Bobbi Lopez, and Chris Jackson knocked long-time incumbent Rodel Rodis off the College Board. But the local proposition results were the most encouraging, demonstrating the power of the SF Democratic Party slate card—and its progressive take-over this year. Mayor Gavin Newsom had some unpleasant surprises on the local initiative front; and while progressives did lose some major propositions, the power of the slate card minimized most of these losses.Read More

I should be happy today, very happy, but Prop 8 makes me so sad.
Now that the "progressives" have another majority on the Board, they will have to come up with a list of cuts in next year's city budget. We already have a hole that is over a QUARTER BILLION DOLLARS in fiscal year 2009-2010's budget.
What are they going to cut?
Please don't say "tax the rich". You can't. Cities cannot levy income taxes or commuter taxes under state law. Sales taxes are going to be raised by the State to over 9%; do you want to add more on top of that?
Programs that are 100% city funded are going to be on the chopping block. General Assistance is one everyone is looking at, as it costs over $100,000,000 a year of COUNTY funds, for a population of over 8000 adults. Some have been on GA for over 10 years.
Are you going to bite the bullet and cut GA to a level that other counties pay? Time limits? You are going to have to choose.
The feds won't be sending any money. The State is broke, and it also will be cutting billions from social programs and schools. Tax increases will not happen this year.
So, Randy, what will it be? Perhaps the new "progressive" supervisors can enlighten us with their ideas.

According to the Department of Elections, voter turnout was only 50.47%. That's it. In other words, half of The City did not vote.
Out of the half that did vote, 71.49 % voted for Bush-accomplice "impeachment is off the table" pro-war, faux "liberal" Pelosi who has consistently ignored the wishes of her constituency. Her opponent, the true progressive, Cindy Sheehan, only got 16.93 %. Disgusting.
Clearly the woman (Pelosi) can do anything for the Bush regime and the corporations and those who do vote will keep voting for her, regardless. Ugh. What does this woman have to do to lose people's votes? The Trail of Broken Promises.
Quote:
PELOSI’S PROMISE TO END THE WAR
Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi said that if she became the speaker of the House of Representatives she would end the war in Iraq. Remember that? The Boston Globe noted, “Pelosi vows no ‘blank check’ on Iraq funds.” (1/8/07). In her own words: “If the president wants to add to this mission, he is going to have to justify it. And this is new to him, because up until now the Republican Congress has given him a blank check with no oversight, no standards, no conditions.” Rick Klein of the Globe noted “Pelosi’s comments mark the first suggestion by a Democratic congressional leader that Congress could use its authority over the nation’s finances to hasten an end to the war. Her remarks point toward an aggressive stance on Iraq from Congressional Democrats in their opening days of control of the House and Senate.”
Yet after she became the speaker of the House in Jan 2007, war appropriations actually went up by $50 billion, with no strings attached and no date for the withdrawal of troops. This year, 2008, they’ve gone up by another $25 billion for a two-year total of $350 billion, with no end in sight. So what happened to the promise of “no blank check?”
