In support of Ali Baher-Students for Justice in Palestine, UC Berkeley.
In Israel it is very common to portray Palestinian leaders as having "blood on their hands". Yitzhak Rabin was widely criticized for shaking the hand of Yasser Arafat for this reason, even though Rabin himself was responsible for the expulsion of Palestinians from several towns and villages in 1948, as well as ordering his soldiers to "break the arms and legs" of protestors during the First Intifada. Shimon Peres, Israel's president, is one of the initiators of its nuclear program, and a member of the governments that violently put down Palestinian civilian protests during both Intifadas. He also bears responsibility for the deaths of countless Lebanese civilians in 80s and 90s. By refusing to shake his hand, Ali Baher highlights these facts, and exposes the hypocrisy and racism of the portrayal of Arab leaders as violent and Israelis as possessing "clean" hands, with no blood stains on them.
SJP welcomes and encourages such acts of civil disobedience and supports Ali Baher in his refusal to shake the hand of Peres. We do not support the disproportionate actions of the university for confiscating Baher's student ID and apprehending him. As a solidarity organization that host events concerning Palestinian narratives and highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people under Israeli aggression, we hope that Baher's civil disobedience will draw attention to the hypocrisy behind Israeli leaders asserting that their hands are "clean" from oppression and occupation.
