Prominent Mormon/ex-49'er Steve Young displays *No on 8* Yard Sign

If the number of yard signs are any indication, residents of Palo Alto, California are strongly against Proposition 8 which would reverse the decision of the California's Supreme Court and eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. Even former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young and his wife, Barbara, both Mormons, have posted *No on 8* yard signs in front of their Palo Alto home. Many Palo Altans have been out on the streets rain or shine to get out the vote for marriage equality.

The Associated Press reported today that former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young and his wife, Barbara, have posted *No on 8* yard signs in front of their home in Palo Alto. According to that report Barbara Young has also donated about $50,000 to defeat the measure, and said in a statement to the AP that she does not believe in discrimination and "therefore our family will vote against Prop. 8." Steve and Barbara Young are prominent members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which has donated much money to the "Yes on 8" campaign. Some sources say that the Church, also known as the Mormon Church, has donated as much as 40% of the funds for Proposition 8, which would reverse the decision of the California's Supreme Court and eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Palo Alto has seen many *No on 8* activists at high traffic intersection rallies over the past few weeks. Some rallies have been sponsored by local churches including the Unitarian Universalist Church and the First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto, while others were organized by Stanford University students. Today's rally in Lytton Plaza in downtown Palo Alto indicated strong support for marriage equality here, with many people taking *No on 8* yard signs and buttons to help get out the vote.

Last year a fire took the old Walgreen's and part of Palo Alto's historic look reappeared where once a chain store stood. This volunteer for *No on 8* carries signs to Lytton Plaza where she joined an ad hoc group of activists.
