Labor On The Job on October 30, 2008 will focus on the 40th anniversary of the San Francisco State strike. This was the longest strike in the history of the United States and it is even more relevant today as the privatization of public universities means that working class students can no longer afford to go to college

Labor On The Job
Join Labor On The Job when we look at the 40th anniversary of the the 1968 San Francisco State Strike. This strike which was led by the Black Student Union and the Third World Liberation Front was the longest student strike in the history of the United States. The issues of the right of working class minorities and all working class youth to a higher education and the establishment of the first Ethnic Studies Department in the United States led to this mass militant strike that not only included the BSU and TWLF but also SDS and the unions on the campus including the AFT.
Joining Labor On The Job will be strike leaders Roger Alvarado of the TWLF and a retired member of UBC Local 22 and Clarence Thomas, a leader of the BSU and a member of the Executive Board of ILWU Local 10. Also joining the discussion is long time labor journalist Dick Meister who covered the strike on KQED Newsroom while he was on strike at the San Francisco Chronicle.
The strike will also be commemorated on the campus between October 29 and November 1 with education panels, video, music, poetry and discussion. For more information go to
