Mexican Drug War Fought with American Guns

by NAM (reposted)
Originally From New America Media

Friday, October 24, 2008 : LOS ANGELES The guns used by Mexican drug traffickers have been traced to the United States, reports La Opini. In a May 26 shootout in Culiacan, Mexico, members of the Sinaloa drug cartel killed eight federal police officers. The drug traffickers were armed with seven AK-47 rifles that had been sold in Phoenix, Ariz., and trafficked to Mexico.
Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard says this has been the traditional way Mexican drug traffickers are supplied with their weapons in a Mexican drug war that has killed more than 500 policemen and more than 4,500 civilians in the last 18 months. The weapons that killed the federal police officers on May 26 were tracked through an electronic system for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as part of the Gunrunner Project, which aims to coordinate with the Mexican government to cut off the flow of weapons. In the past two years, Goddard says arms trafficking to Mexico has increased significantly.
