New Profile, is Investigated for Helping Teens Avoid Israeli Military Draft

by Larry
On September 15, the Israeli police started an investigation into whether an Anti-Military Organization has violated the law by providing information to teens on how to avoid military service. The investigation was called by Israel’s Military Advocate Avichai Mendelblit who also recommended also prosecuting Mohammad Bakri, the maker of “Jenin Jenin” for libel. A few weeks later, Mendeblit was ordered by the Israeli High Court to reconsider a decision to give a general brigade and soldier who participate in shooting a bound Palestinian a very light sentence.
On September 15, Israel’s attorney general has ordered the police to investigate whether an anti-military organization has violated the law by advising through its website how to avoid serving in the Israeli military. The group called New Profile has been providing accurate information on the criminal activity that one would have to engage in as a youth in the occupying Israeli military. New Profile has also listed information on how one can be exempt from military draft.
The criminal investigation was ordered on behalf of Israel’s Military Advocate General Mendelblit who also asked that Mohammad Bakri be prosecuted for libel against the Israeli Military for making the movie, Jenin Jenin. The film documents the atrocities committed by the Israeli Occupation forces during the invasion of Jenin in 2002. Bakry was acquitted in May in a trial brought forward by Israeli soldiers who charged Bakry with slander.
A couple of weeks later, on October 6, the High Court of Israel ordered that Mendelblit reconsider his decision to charge soldiers who shoot a bound and blind-folded with “unbecoming conduct”. The Court received the appeal brought forward by human rights organization and Ashraf Abu-Rahma the Palestinian who was shot, who argued that to charge soldiers with “unbecoming conduct” is a light charge that does not carry any jail sentence or military expulsion.
Mosharaf Abu Rahma, who was arrested in demonstration against the Apartheid Wall, said in an interview, “the whole world saw the crime that was perpetrated against me. Crimes against most Palestinians are more horrific and they are never filmed or documented. In its decision to only persecute the people who shot me with such a light charge I was reminded that Israel just likes to pretend to be a democracy. In reality it is far from that.”
