Iraq Minorities Want Power Share

by IOL (reposted)
BAGHDAD — Christians and other religious minorities are lobbying the parliament to restore a section of an earlier version of the provincial elections law that guaranteed their political representation.
"Minorities in Iraq aren’t being politically represented properly since the US-led invasion in 2003 and the minimum of power we had, is now being taken from us," Bashar Hayett, spokesperson for Iraqi Christian Association, told IslamOnline.net.

"During Saddam Hussein regime, our vice-president was Christian and now we fight for few provincial seats that have been seen as too much for us."

An prerequisite allocating seats for Christians, Yazidis and Shabeks on provincial council was dropped when parliament approved the new elections law on September 24.

Article 50 would have provided 13 provincial council seats for Christians and two seats for Yazidis and Shabeks in six provinces.

Iraq's three-member presidency council has approved the long-delayed law, paving the way for polls to take place in 14 of Iraq's 18 provinces early next year.
