Go Home Britons: Iraq PM
CAIRO — Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki believes it is time for British combat forces to leave his country because they are no more needed to provide security in the south, giving a damning evaluation for their performance in Basra.
"We thank them for the role they have played, but I think that their stay is not necessary for maintaining security and control," Maliki told The Times in an interview on Monday, October 13.
He said few British troops may remain for training, but not for combat.
"There might be a need for their experience in training and some technological issues, but as a fighting force, I don’t think that is necessary."
British troops were deployed in the southern oil city of Basra after the 2003 US-led invasion but handed over responsibility for south security to Iraqi forces last December.
