Let's not forget that the number of mice and rats, the most commonly used animals, do not even have to be reported and are therefore not mentioned here. It probably numbers in the tens of thousands.

Yani, you're absolutely right. Lab-bred rodents and birds are not even covered under the Animal Welfare Act. The latest figure we have for the total number of animals comes from the University PR office and puts the number at 40,000. The Northwest Animal Facility will be expanded by seventy percent with the addition of the Li Ka-Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences, scheduled for completion in March '10

They mentioned 115 mice - but that does seem low for the school. They have to have rabbits for cell biology and I didn't see that listed.
The rest could be less than the number of mortalities at the local animal shelter, much less McDonalds or fish caught in the bay.
Animal Welfare Act only includes wild mice, thus the 115 number. The total number of animals used at UC Berkeley at any given time is 40,000.
