Dam Owner PacifiCorp Takes Hit From Regulators

California water quality
regulators have said they believe an application from the owner of the
Klamath River dams, which was looking to operate the hydropower project
with only minor changes in the future, doesn't fit state law. The State Water Resources
Control Board's staff on Tuesday said that Pacificorp's application isn't legally
feasible. The regulators said in a
notice to prepare an environmental impact report that they would
instead review a number of other alternatives to determine if they will
improve water quality in the troubled river, and bring that before the
public. Eureka Times-Standard - 10/2/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00163GbmrEgZ95mW6wKz5Fhs70iqjUrKj2CrspgP-KltjSE5n6I3GlkaiYQjC8--occKw2szFMplc0S_BrCqEokd1lDogIW2pSbjlPdugBJVobKFDIvTTnnv1l4bavw4LiT9qWrXZZG-dvLbV9aP6qlfw==]

Tribes, Fishermen Rally for Dam Removal

Members of the Klamath Tribes, fishermen and
others rallied in front of PacifiCorp's headquarters Thursday afternoon
in Portland. They want the utility to remove its dams from the Klamath
River. Becca Bartleson reports.
About
150 people marched three blocks to stand and chant in unison. Their
target is PacifiCorp. The company owns and operates six dams on the
Klamath River. Oregon Public Broadcasting - 9/19/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00163GbmrEgZ97DKyRVvCvYo6_R47vj3Tpv5xojJnH_8aK2iyntMnmNWQcID75u5X3RwqE4HweKPOPzKrBGI6_eQ8B7USH8mFQt3LT7y_luUfxBeqB29q_dDHsdnIvxXYdyzNUZj5mITC2dkE2pk-F7YFBHuYAgcy1-I6sIDcBjgO2FV5Wk8Wig0Xp9BbSL6t0n]

USFWS: Fish Kills a Common Occurrence on Klamath

A recent "mortality event" affected juvenile salmonids on the Klamath
River, according to Matt Baun, Public Affairs Specialist for the United
States Fish and Wildlife Service. Baun said that officials learned of the die-off
during the week of July
7 when tagged juvenile Chinook salmon failed to show up near the Happy
Camp area, with a subsequent search revealing many dead juvenile
salmonids, as well as dead suckers, sculpins and a catfish at several
thermal refugia areas. Siskiyou Daily News - 9/26/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00163GbmrEgZ96w54rv4t_CIZVLmVxwtBKmxKAkeOmMfkyW_HXzaRoHVNb_cOfwCXUKGfy9cZdeMniDghWZXFr1B6fsMNLycDaKzpcp_WgDA5H8YwIubIEEjUyUo00r4MoenoHu703BcXnou8im4SXtFpRdiaOsRgye84yTGgsNp5iMbQQIIr9HPcE1h6L0BRVst6lS5THU7L0=]

Shasta River Community Gathers for "Water Talks"

A series of informational presentations called Water Talks is being
held in south Siskiyou County to help inform residents about Mount
Shasta's unique ecosystems and projects in the Shasta, Upper Sacramento
and McCloud watersheds. The first talk was held last night at the Weed
Mercantile Mall, and residents from Yreka to Dunsmuir showed up to
learn more about their local watersheds. Siskiyou Daily News - 9/24/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00163GbmrEgZ97Sjqlx_p2Q6su9awtn5vsPxlVSgekdVJcVmzcrHD4mArlT0KadKhZcc1DsTV1IoKVQJ-bIqkroc2sVR_IqgHBPSYyL5YXYM3ahbptxPzA1gB4z78Lv50yyhGDSHhCmWbcK5NKqJHOBOXV61luUWfeoXqpv5hclJezy5Y0AWR7x2KzEJmiVRs2_]

Opinion: More than Bailouts Needed for West Coast Fish

...Without major
changes in federal salmon policy to protect and restore these once
vibrant river systems, the government will find itself in the unhappy
position of bailing out fishermen for years to come - although it's not
clear how many more years the West Coast's commercial salmon fishing
industry can hang on if conditions continue to deteriorate. Fishermen
need more than relief checks; they need healthy rivers.
